About the role
Are you an experienced Manual Turner looking for a secure, long-term opportunity? We’re looking for a skilled machinist to join a growing engineering team in Brownhills, working with conventional lathes on a variety of precision components. This role would suit someone who takes pride in producing high-quality work and enjoys hands-on machining in a traditional workshop setting.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Setting and operating manual (conventional) lathes to produce precision components
- Working from engineering drawings and technical specifications to tight tolerances
- Selecting appropriate cutting tools, speeds, and feeds for different materials
- Machining materials including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, and alloys
- Carrying out thread cutting, boring, facing, and turning operations
- Producing one-off and small batch work
- Measuring and inspecting using micrometers, verniers, and gauges
- Ensuring all work meets quality standards and specifications
- Maintaining machinery and keeping work areas clean and safe
- Identifying and reporting machining issues or defects
- Supporting continuous improvement within the workshop
Skills & Experience Required
- Proven experience as a Manual Turner / Centre Lathe Turner / Conventional Machinist
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
- Strong understanding of manual machining techniques
- Experience working to tight tolerances
- Competent using inspection and measuring equipment
- Reliable, detail-oriented, and able to work independently
Desirable (but not essential)
- Time-served apprenticeship or relevant machining qualification
- Experience in a precision engineering environment
- Knowledge of additional manual machines (milling, drilling, etc.)
