About the job The Intellectual Property (IP) department is seeking an Associate IP Counsel to support the rigid plastic packaging IP portfolio, preferably to be located in the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, but for the right candidate, we will consider locations near other Berry facilities in Europe. The job involves working very closely with the R&D, sales and product line teams in Europe, Asia and the US to identify and generate patentable ideas, preparing IP documents such as patents and developing a sound patent filing and management strategy, providing expert opinions and advice with respect to the freedom to operate, counterfeit etc. This is a unique opportunity working within a multicultural IP team across the globe and being responsible for certain part of the rigid consumer packaging IP portfolio. Duties and Responsibilities · Assisting in the administration of the IP portfolio worldwide for the rigid consumer packaging incl. mould technology IP portfolio · Drafting of patents, opinions etc. or mandating outside resources for such tasks · Actively monitoring competitor activity including publication of patent applications, registered designs, and trademarks · Providing IP advice to the R&D, sales and product line teams worldwide, including product and process innovation · Communicating intellectual property activities to the company’s executive board · Assisting in managing a network of outside firms used to perform specific, selected tasks in order to optimize performance and cost · Training employees to be educated on intellectual property matters · Providing senior level support of and partnership across all Berry divisions with legal needs in Europe Qualifications · The successful candidate must have a University degree in Engineering, Physics or similar degree · A minimum of 2-5 years of patent experience within a law firm and/or corporate in-house setting · Qualified or partly qualified European Patent Attorney and/or a national patent attorney · Knowledge of packaging background such as mould technology or knowledge of materials and plastics would be an advantage · Experience with Patent Application Preparation and Prosecution required · Intellectual Property transactional experience, including licensing, contracts, joint development agreements, etc. (preferred) · Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to clearly, thoroughly and succinctly communicate complex ideas in English language; · Proactive and consultative approach with strong ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing work requirements
