Overview

Job Purpose

To lead the development and implementation of comprehensive health, safety, and environmental (SHE) strategies in alignment with legal, corporate, and regulatory requirements. This includes managing site compliance, leading risk assessments, and implementing preventative measures to ensure a safe, legally compliant, and environmentally responsible workplace. The role also includes operational oversight of the site’s effluent treatment plant and engagement with relevant external authorities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Health, Safety, and Environmental (SHE) function for the Bernard Matthews Derby site, providing competent guidance and strategic direction to all departments.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain SHE policies, procedures, and systems to ensure compliance with UK legislation, industry standards, and corporate policies.
  • Conduct and lead detailed risk assessments, audits, and inspections across all operational areas.
  • Manage site compliance with environmental regulations, including waste management, emissions, and water treatment.
  • Oversee the safe and efficient operation of the site’s effluent treatment plant, ensuring adherence to all environmental permits and discharge consents.
  • Liaise effectively with local authorities, environmental agencies (e.g. EA), and regulatory bodies to maintain compliance and represent the company in audits, inspections, and reporting.
  • Support and drive site sustainability initiatives in line with company environmental goals and objectives.
  • Deliver training and awareness programmes to embed a strong safety culture and environmental responsibility across all teams.
  • Monitor SHE performance metrics, investigate incidents and non-conformities, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Provide leadership in continuous improvement efforts to minimise risk and enhance environmental performance.

Person Specification

Essential Skills, Experience & Knowledge:

  • NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent) and Chartered Membership of IOSH (or working towards it).
  • Extensive experience in Health, Safety & Environmental management, preferably in a manufacturing or food processing environment.
  • In-depth understanding of UK health, safety, and environmental legislation, including EA and HSE requirements.
  • Experience in the operation or oversight of effluent treatment or wastewater plants.
  • Demonstrated success in engaging with external regulators and maintaining regulatory compliance.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to influence and engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • Proactive, pragmatic, and solutions-focused with a strong track record of implementing SHE improvements.
  • Competent in data analysis, incident investigation, and root cause identification.
