The Bermuda Monetary Authority (Authority or BMA) is seeking the services of a skilled and capable individual to work as a Deputy Director – Strategy in our Policy Development, Strategy and International Affairs Department. Reporting to the Managing Director – Policy, Strategy and International Affairs, the Deputy Director - Strategy will be responsible for assisting senior management in developing and managing the corporate strategy process and working with relevant stakeholders to produce corporate strategy documents and reports for the BMA Board of Directors (Board). This will include gathering and evaluating international and domestic developments, market forecasts, cross-functional business processes and innovation to develop corporate strategies. The successful incumbent will also work with heads of departments to translate the corporate strategy into departmental strategies aligned with the Authority’s mission, vision and goals. In addition, the postholder will assist with ongoing monitoring of the implementation progress and goal achievement. They will also be responsible for working with Senior Management to build a culture of strategy within the Authority and will lead a small team to manage the Authority’s strategy development and implementation.
This is a key role for the Authority and the postholder will be responsible for, but not limited to:
- Working with Senior Management in the development and execution of the Authority’s strategy, ensuring the process is robust, leading to clear goals, strategies and objectives to support the BMA’s Mission and Vision. This includes utilising suitable metrics to measure performance and progress and ensuring that strategic initiatives are aligned with the BMA’s core mandate, stated vision, goals and priorities.
- Collaborating with Senior Management in developing and implementing strategic initiatives, identifying strategic risks and interdependencies and identifying strategic partnership opportunities.
- Assisting in the Board reporting process, including key strategic initiatives.
- Providing advice on strategic matters as they relate to the Authority’s operational and regulatory responsibilities, and in defining and refining the strategy and operating framework.
- Collaborating with relevant departments to ensure strategic initiatives have clear underlying logic, which is well understood by affected stakeholders, and providing critical feedback on execution plans to ensure successful implementation.
- Engaging external stakeholders on their views of the reasonableness and efficacy of the Authority’s strategic initiatives and utilising the information, as necessary, for continuous improvement.
- Supporting organisation-wide planning, development, strategy education and communication activities, and monitoring strategic execution of Authority-wide initiatives, as needed.
- Directing the preparation of reports of findings of the area(s) reviewed to convey information to Senior Management and the Board (where appropriate) concerning environmental factors that may impact the Authority’s corporate strategy.
- Participating in the Enterprise Risk Committee, Regulatory Committee and other internal committees of the BMA, as requested.
- Assisting with the development of timely budgets for the effective management of the Department, ensuring that controls are in place to monitor the operations and provide accountability for expenses in keeping with the goals and objectives of the BMA.
- Leading and managing staff in addition to providing support for technical and administrative issues that focus on the achievement of Departmental goals.
- Performing other related work and special projects as assigned by management in accordance with competencies normally associated with the post.
This position requires a proven technical and business background; therefore, the postholder must have:
- A master’s degree or equivalent qualification in strategy, public policy, administration, international relations or business administration from a recognised institution or professional body.
- A minimum of twelve (12) years of relevant experience, of which at least five (5) years should be at a senior level in strategy within the financial services business, public or regulatory body.
- Proven track record of effectively interacting with diverse stakeholders, including executives, public officials, boards of directors and international entities.
- Ability to be collaborative, diplomatic, proactive, outcome-driven and resourceful.
- Possess an aptitude for strategic thinking with a commitment to the implementation of growth strategies and organisational effectiveness.
- Superior problem-solving ability with excellent managerial and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work well under pressure with tight deadlines and multiple priorities.
- Proven track record of utilising strong administrative, organisational and project management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation and facilitation skills.
- Excellent listening and people skills.
