Salary Transparency: For those residing in NY, the pay rate for this position is $25/hour.

Role

The Line Locator Technician reports to the Project Manager. This role focuses on detecting and locating underground utility lines and pipes. It requires high physical activity, excellent attention to detail, and flexibility day to day.

Responsibilities

  • Line Locating: Receive work tickets from the 811 system; read and interpret utility maps showing underground utilities; identify the location of underground utility lines and pipes using magnetic sensing equipment and maps (Sure-Lock Utility Pro); mark locations with color-coded spray paint for electric, water, gas, telephone, etc.; work in various weather conditions and use shovels as needed to pinpoint locations; follow strict Utility, State and Federal guidelines for Utility Line Marking; provide records of work performed using a digital camera and laptop.
  • Team Collaboration: Participate in safety meetings; provide timely reports and documentation to management per procedures; escalate issues to Supervisor per procedures; report customer, equipment and vehicle issues promptly.
  • Customer Communication: Refer all consumer complaints to the appropriate authorities; provide general information about utility lines or pipes to customers; use telephones, tablets, and/or computers to communicate.
  • Other duties as assigned.

About You

Must haves:

  • Education: None. Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Experience: No experience necessary; employees will be trained. Upon hire, the candidate will need to complete and pass all Pipeline Operator Qualification (OQ) training. Must possess a valid driver’s license

Nice to have:

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience: 1 or more years of experience in line locating

  • Adequate time management skills to finish work in a timely manner
  • Excellent communication skills; comfortable interacting with management and customers
  • Ability to interact with unhappy or negative customers professionally
  • Excellent attention to detail for problem solving
  • Ability to walk long distances and prepare for weather conditions accordingly

Fit: This role may not be a good fit if you do not enjoy working independently, outdoor conditions, walking long distances, or adapting to changing schedules, or lack planning and time management skills to finish a day’s work promptly.

  • Drug/alcohol testing required per Federal DOT regulations for employees working with gas meters
