Job Opportunity: Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for a Product Counsel to join the European Product Advisory team, based in London or Dublin. This role reports to the Head of Underwriting, Europe, and supports BHSI teammates across Europe by advising on property and casualty insurance product wordings and underwriting queries. The position offers meaningful exposure to the business through close collaboration with global Legal, Risk, Compliance, and Governance teams, as well as direct engagement with underwriting and commercial stakeholders. With a strong emphasis on learning and development, this role provides a long‑term growth opportunity to build and deepen technical expertise across a broad range of products, including accident & health, surety, and marine products.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assist underwriters in the development of new property and casualty insurance products.
- Draft, negotiate, and amend property and casualty policy wordings and related documentation (including endorsements, quotation documents, and IPIDs).
- Update insurance documentation in response to legal and regulatory changes.
- Lead wording negotiations with brokers and business partners.
- Monitor relevant legal and regulatory developments and proactively advise underwriters.
- Instruct and manage external counsel where specialist legal advice is required.
- Deliver training and coaching to underwriting and claims colleagues to enhance wording quality and consistency.
- Respond to requests for legal support from underwriters, prioritising workload in line with business objectives.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders, including underwriters, brokers, and service providers, ensuring clear and effective communication.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Qualified solicitor/legal executive in England & Wales or Ireland, or senior claims executive, with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in insurance wordings/coverage, preferably within property.
- Strong technical insurance knowledge, including experience with international and multinational property insurance contracts.
- Solid understanding of insurance regulatory and licensing requirements within the UK, Ireland, and Europe.
- General legal knowledge of related areas such as GDPR and insurance distribution.
- Understanding of European insurance markets, including the London company market and Lloyd’s market.
- Proficiency in SharePoint, Excel, and Word.
- Excellent communication, organisational, time management, and project management skills.
- Fluent English: an additional European language is desirable but not essential.
