Job Opportunity:

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced actuarial candidate to join our European Actuarial Team. We are looking for an individual who has both an ability to excel and an excellence of character. Our culture is innovative and fast paced and this position will be the perfect fit for an individual who is intellectually curious, self-motivated, and collaborative.

This position will be based in our London office with a focus on our UK and European Property and Marine portfolio including General Property, Energy & Technical Property, Builders Risk, and Marine. The tasks and responsibilities will grow in line with the maturity of the business and the candidate’s profile.

The role is open for qualified and nearly qualified candidates. Job title and compensation will be commensurate with the experience and exam level of the individual.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Prioritize and drive the development of pricing models and work closely with the global actuarial function to ensure accurate implementation.
  • Carry out and deliver existing projects such as pricing model recalibration, pricing model enhancement.
  • Price individual large insurance policies and be the business partner for underwriters in this process.
  • Work with the data compilation team to ensure high quality data capture.
  • Provide general pricing support to the business across 9 countries in Europe, including technical assistance on pricing models, data quality issues and so on.
  • Measure, track, and monitor products performance by producing product reviews to support portfolio management and underwriting strategies.
  • Collaborate across functions and regions on the development and maintenance of actuarial pricing and reporting processes.
  • Carry out pricing model training sessions across Europe on-line and in person.
  • Work with Global Underwriting Officers and build close business partnership with key stakeholders.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in actuarial studies, mathematics, statistics, or a related field.
  • Actuarial experience in a General Insurance role, preferably in Pricing.
  • Advanced skills in MS Excel and at least one of the programming languages such as SQL, VBA, R and/or Python.
  • Qualified actuary or nearly qualified making good progress with examinations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, capable of communicating complex concepts to a non-actuarial audience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Strong desire to learn from and share knowledge with teammates.
