Purpose of the Role
Join the Audio & Communications Team as the Interior Lighting Engineer where you will be part of the team responsible for all the Interior Lighting design and development for the complete Bentley product range. In this exciting role you will be involved in designing and developing both direct and indirect lighting solutions for the inside of the car to elevate the cabin experience to unparalleled levels of luxury.You will be responsible for the specification, test and validation plan to achieve the cost, weight, timing and quality targets for the project.Reporting into the Functional Manager – Audio & Communications your main responsibilities include;
- Ownership/development of Interior Lighting parts and functions
- Support and lead Optical, Mechanical and Electrical Design development
- Support and lead Software and Function development for the next generation of lighting solutions and its control electronics
- Planning and managing project related activities to support delivery
- Creative problem solving that balances aesthetics with functionality, ergonomics and safety
- Strong project management skills to support in the development of the interior lighting deliverables and milestones within the defined time line and budget
- Development of Lighting prototypes and use of digital tools and Artificial Intelligence to support the prototyping process and visualizations
- Attention to detail, developing Extraordinary lighting solutions
- Ensure compliance with Automotive lighting regulations
- Team collaboration working with multidisciplinary team that includes mechanical engineers, designers and Automotive system engineers is critical
- Liaise with Clients, senior management, suppliers and VW group counterparts to communicate development, requirements and challenges
- Analysis optical performance, including lighting distribution, intensity and colour consistency based on physical models and simulation results as well
- Overseas travel to support project requirements

As part of the forward-thinking Research & Development (R&D) department, we are at the heart of driving Bentley\’s Beyond100 +strategy, focusing on sustainability and cutting-edge technology.
Our energetic and nimble team is responsible for crafting luxury UX for Bentley\’s present and future vehicles, from the initial sketch to the final software delivery. We work across User Interface (UI), graphics, interaction design, interior lighting, sound, displays, switches, antennas, and software.If you\’re passionate about shaping the future of automotive engineering, our team is the perfect place for you.
About you – Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate will have experience in interior lighting within either the automotive Industry or the consumer electronics industry. Along with the following experience:
- Lighting Technology: awareness and understanding of technologies such as LEDs, light guides, prisms, mirrors and other optical elements which are predominantly used in modern automotive interior lighting
- Optical Design: Understanding of optical principles, units, measurements and designing light distribution and beam patterns inside vehicles. Good understanding of optical simulations and being able to use their results to find innovative solutions to optical challenges
- Electronics design: Knowledge and experience on Automotive ECUs incl. design, development, manufacturing and testing
- SW design: Knowledge and experience in Automotive embedded SW development, SW testing and management
- System engineering: Understanding of end-to-end functional ownership for lighting and development according to the V-model of System engineering
- CAN Bus & Automotive Electrical System: Knowledge of automotive communication networks like CAN, LIN and Ethernet, as these are used for controlling lighting systems within vehicles. Knowledge of VW Group toolchain for vehicle diagnostics is an advantage
- Human Factors & Ergonomics: Familiarity with HMI (Human-Machine Interface) concepts, as lighting plays a key role in user experience, comfort, and safety
- Simulation & Design Software:
- Knowledge of 3D CAD tools such as CATIA, SolidWorks.
- Understanding of lighting simulation software e.g. SPEOS
- Understanding of Digital tools used in supporting visual prototyping eg TouchDesigner
- EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility): Familiarity with designing lighting systems that comply with automotive EMC standards to avoid interference with other electronics.
- Engineering Degree or equivalent relevant experience
- Knowledge of global automotive standards eg FMVSS/ISO
- Knowledge of VW Group standards and Specifications is an advantage
