Working Hours:

Monday to Friday 40 hours per week flexible hours between 07:00 and 18:00 – You are also required to work such additional hours as may be necessary for the proper performance of your duties or that may be required to fulfil role.

Job Role/Description

We have an exciting opportunity to be part of one of our newest businesses, Bennie Haulage Ltd. We require a Head of Haulage to successfully lead this division and meet our customers’ needs in an ever-growing Group.

You will lead a team of HGV drivers and office staff to safely transport goods and materials ensuring all transport and & safety legislation is met, and our company policies and procedures are followed. You will support the growth of the division and build a diverse, inclusive business.

Whilst you will be hands on with the day-to-day elements of the business, your stakeholder engagement at a senior level will be key. You will need to work with the Directors of the Group as well as the other Group trading businesses to align with their growth plans and support them accordingly as well as working with Finance and reporting to the Group MD on budgeting, capex and strategic planning.

Responsibilities

People

  • Oversee daily transport operations across the UK.
  • Drive the strategic direction, business planning and growth of Bennie Haulage.
  • Lead the delivery of regional transport planning projects, ensuring excellence in quality, finance performance, and client satisfaction.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, promoting repeat business and long-term partnerships.
  • Overseeing preventative and predictive maintenance programmes to ensure asset reliability and availability.
  • Identify and secure new opportunities, diversifying our client base and strengthening our market presence.
  • Oversee the production of high-quality transport assessments, travel plans, transport modelling and environmental assessments aligned with national policy and vision-led planning principles.
  • Lead the identification, feasibility and design of transport and mobility solutions.
  • Prepare evidence and representations for planning strategies and policy development, including Public Inquiries where required..

Operations;

  • Lead and manage the transport function and deliver optimal transport solutions for delivery.
  • Overseeing the daily performance of all transport operations, ensuring KPIs and SLAs are achieved.
  • Ensuring full compliance with transport legislation regulatory frameworks, and safety standards.
  • Implement best-in-class routing, planning, and transport management systems to optimise performance.
  • Proactively seek optimisation and backloads without affecting service.
  • Be accountable for performance against key KPI measures.
  • Continually review processes to ensure improvements are made.
  • Manage and collate necessary information and document to manage FORS compliance.
  • Responsible for budgets and cost management.
  • Oversee all transportation activities for the company, including managing of fleet, scheduling drivers, and ensuring that all transportation regulations are met.
  • Review tachograph data regularly to spot any driver rule violations and provide appropriate training to help drivers improve their overall performance as and when needed.
  • Oversee the coordination and management of transport schedules to meet both customer and company expectations.
  • Ensure vehicle maintenance is up to date including MOT and tax payments.
  • Keep organised records of vehicles, schedules and completed orders.
  • Liaise with customers and stakeholders, providing excellent customer service.
  • Communicate efficiently and professionally to internal and external customers.

Safety;

  • Ensure full compliance with operator’s licence and all relevant transport, health and safety, and environmental and legal legislation.
  • Promote a proactive, positive health and safety culture.
  • Implement and be responsible for the company’s safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure any accidents/incidents are reported to the Group Managing Director and Head of People & Operations immediately, and the Incident/Accident procedure followed and take corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
  • Champion Health & Safety by promoting and complying with the company Health & Safety policy and all relevant legislation.
  • Work closely with relevant authorities and agencies to address compliance issues and stay informed about updates.

  • Knowledge of UK transport law and regulations.
  • Knowledge of transport methods and associated costs.
  • Great ability to lead a growing team, delegate accordingly but be balanced on the detail vs strategy.
  • Strong problem-solving skills & analytical thinker.
  • Computer literate and competent in the use of software packages.
  • Excellent communication skills with all levels of customers and colleagues.
  • Ability to create professional relationships.
  • Great administration and co-ordination skills.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy.
  • Ability to work to deadlines and under pressure.
  • Self-motivator, flexible and confident.
  • Proven knowledge and skills of managing a team.
  • Relevant transport and driver legislation knowledge.
  • Knowledge of heavy vehicle maintenance would be essential.
  • Knowledge of SAGE200 is highly desirable.
