Design Engineer Job Overview

  • Tunnel & Shaft Design - Develop structurally sound and geotechnically optimized designs for various underground projects.
  • Excavation & Ground Stability - Assess and ensure safe excavation techniques, slope stability, and shoring solutions using industry-standard geotechnical principles.
  • Impact Assessments - Evaluate tunnelling effects on third-party assets and obtain necessary approvals from National Highways, Network Rail etc.
  • Technical Reporting - Prepare high-quality design reports and progress updates for stakeholders and clients.
  • Specialist Design Work - Contribute to complex designs, including:
  • Shaft buoyant stability, reinforced concrete bases, and cover slabs.
  • Tunnel designs for Microtunnelling, Pipejacking, HDD, Augerbore, and Timber Headings.
  • Earthworks and soil nailing solutions.
  • Crane platforms and temporary works design.

Design Engineer Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or Geology.
  • 3-8 years' experience in tunnel, shaft, or geotechnical / Structural design.
  • Strong understanding of geotechnical principles, excavation methods, and tunnelling impact assessments.
  • Excellent report writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
