A well-established civil engineering and construction contractor is seeking a Buyer to join its procurement team based in Henfield, West Sussex. This role is ideal for a Buyer with experience in construction or engineering procurement who enjoys a fast-paced environment, working closely with Estimating, Commercial, and Site Teams.
The Buyer will be responsible for:
- Obtaining competitive quotations for materials, plant, and services
- Placing orders and expediting deliveries to meet programme requirements
- Maintaining supplier performance records and the approved supplier list
- Supporting QHSE with supplier audits and compliance checks
- Liaising closely with Contracts, Estimating, and Project Teams
- Issuing material enquiries in line with project plans, specifications, and drawings
- Collating, analysing, and comparing quotations for tenders and live contracts
- Providing cost advice and support to Estimators during tender stages
- Extracting material requirements from tender and procurement information
- Assisting the Senior Buyer with cost analysis, reporting, and scheduling
- Arranging transfer of materials and plant between sites and head office as required
- Identifying efficiencies, consolidating purchases, and driving cost savings
- Providing cover for the Senior Buyer during periods of absence
- Distributing purchase orders and procurement information to sites and stakeholders
- Supporting the training and development of team members, including apprentices
Required Skills & Experience:
- Proven experience in a Purchasing or Buying role, ideally within construction or civil engineering
- Strong time management and organisational skills
- Ability to analyse data and produce clear cost and procurement reports
- Good understanding of material specifications and procurement processes
- Working knowledge of QHSE legislation and compliance requirements
- Familiarity with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 management systems
- Understanding of FSC and PEFC chain of custody management systems
- Experience using EVision and Procore (or similar procurement/project systems)
- Purchasing qualification (desirable)
- Full UK driving licence or suitable travel arrangements
- Sustainability awareness (desirable)
