Position: Part Time Community Liaison Officer

Location: Hove

Salary: £12.17 - £15.00 per hour - 12 Month Fixed term contract

As Public Liaison Officer, you will be the first point of contact for residents, businesses and community groups, ensuring clear, timely communication about the Brighton Marina to Coastal Defences works. You will coordinate enquiries, support drop-in sessions and public liaison events, create updates for BHCC channels and social media, and contribute to schools/STEM and social value activities.

Hours: 15 hours per week, split across three weekdays. Core 10:00–15:00 (flexible by agreement). Occasional evening/weekend events by prior notice.

Job Overview

  • Respond to public enquiries (phone/email/in person) and log all interactions; brief the project team on issues and trends.
  • Run drop-in support and assist with quarterly liaison events (planning, delivery, follow-up).
  • Produce short updates for BHCC newsletters/noticeboards and capture photos and basic content (with consent).
  • Support social value activities and schools engagement (assemblies, workshops, site walk- and-talks).
  • Provide regular progress notes to the Marketing/PR team and identify positive story opportunities.

Job Requirements

  • Experience in a public-facing/community role; confident communicator in person, on the phone and in writing.
  • Excellent written/spoken English; able to handle conflict professionally.
  • Comfortable producing short written content for newsletters and social media.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Desirable: Public relations training; CSCS; basic photo/video; familiarity with Mailchimp/Canva/CRM; local knowledge.
  • Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain) for work with schools/young people.
