Our client is currently recruiting a Senior Design Engineer to join their specialist Civil Engineering business. This role will involve leading the development and delivery of both temporary and permanent works designs across complex infrastructure and heavy civil engineering projects. The successful Senior Design Engineer will play a key role in ensuring designs are technically robust, safe, and fully compliant with relevant standards while supporting project teams from initial concept through to construction delivery.

The Senior Design Engineer will be responsible for overseeing the production and review of engineering designs, calculations, drawings, and technical documentation. They will work closely with project teams, clients, and supply-chain partners to ensure designs are practical, buildable, and aligned with project programmes. This role will also involve providing technical leadership, mentoring junior engineers, and supporting continuous improvement in design processes, digital engineering practices, and temporary works governance.

The ideal candidate will have strong experience in temporary works design within the civil engineering sector, including structures such as formwork, falsework, excavation support systems, and crane bases. They will have a solid understanding of relevant standards such as BS 5975, Eurocodes, and UK Health & Safety legislation.

Position Overview
  • Lead the development, delivery and technical assurance of temporary and permanent works designs from initial brief through to issued construction information.
  • Ensure designs comply with BS 5975, Eurocodes, and relevant UK Health & Safety legislation.
  • Produce, review and check design calculations, drawings, technical reports and designer's risk registers.
  • Ensure all designs are safe, buildable, economical and appropriate for site conditions.
  • Manage multiple concurrent design tasks, including prioritisation, programme alignment and coordination with project teams.
  • Act as the key interface between designers, project teams, clients and supply-chain specialists to ensure coordinated design delivery.
  • Undertake site visits to assess conditions, provide engineering guidance and advise on temporary works implementation and permanent works buildability.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring and guidance to junior engineers, graduates and technicians.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of design processes, including BIM/CDE integration and digital engineering practices.
  • Support design governance by ensuring correct categorisation of temporary works and appropriate levels of design checking and assurance documentation.
Position Requirements
  • Degree (BEng/MEng) in Civil or Structural Engineering or equivalent qualification.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards chartership with ICE or IStructE.
  • Minimum 7-10 years' experience in temporary works design within civil engineering.
  • Experience designing temporary works including falsework, formwork, excavation support, propping, access platforms and crane bases.
  • Strong understanding of Eurocodes, British Standards and temporary works procedures including BS 5975.
  • Experience producing and checking engineering calculations, technical reports and design risk assessments in accordance with CDM Regulations.
  • Proven experience working with multidisciplinary teams, external designers and specialist subcontractors.
  • Experience managing stakeholder expectations and coordinating design delivery across project stages.
  • Background working within both design office and site environments would be advantageous.
  • Experience mentoring or supporting the development of junior engineering staff.
  • Proficiency with engineering and design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Robot, Revit, InfraWorks or Navisworks.
  • Strong understanding of BIM processes and Common Data Environments (CDE).
  • Relevant CSCS Card (Professionally Qualified Person level).
  • Full UK driving licence.
