We are seeking a motivated and experienced Workshop Team Leader to join a growing plant hire business serving the construction, rail, major project, and energy sectors. The role involves leading a team of workshop fitters to maintain, repair, and prepare plant hire equipment to the highest standards of safety, reliability, and quality. You will work closely with the Workshop Supervisor to ensure smooth daily operations, adherence to company procedures, and a positive, safe working environment. This is a hands-on leadership role with excellent opportunities to develop your team and influence workshop processes. This position is based in Weston-Super-Mare.
Job Overview
- Team Leadership & Coordination
- Lead and support a team of workshop fitters in day-to-day tasks.
- Allocate jobs and resources to meet service and turnaround targets.
- Mentor and train new and existing team members and apprentices.
- Assist with recruitment, onboarding, and conducting six-monthly personal development reviews.
- Communicate effectively with the Workshop Supervisor and other departments.
- Maintenance & Repairs
- Perform services, pre-delivery inspections (PDI), post-hire inspections (PHI), 12-monthly inspections, and repairs.
- Ensure all plant equipment is maintained to a high standard and prepared for hire.
- Health & Safety
- Promote and ensure compliance with health and safety policies and procedures.
- Conduct toolbox talks, risk assessments, and PPE compliance checks.
- Report and investigate accidents, incidents, or near misses promptly.
- Quality & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and timely records of service, repairs, and parts used.
- Ensure tools, equipment, and work areas are clean, serviceable, and compliant with company standards.
- Process & Improvement
- Support continuous improvement initiatives, including lean practices and process reviews.
- Monitor and contribute to productivity and efficiency improvements within the workshop.
Job Requirements
- Essential:
- Proven experience in a workshop fitter or plant maintenance role, preferably in the construction industry.
- Experience leading a small team or mentoring colleagues.
- Strong technical knowledge of plant and construction equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and service bulletins.
- Understanding of health and safety legislation and practices in a workshop environment.
- Strong organisational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Desirable:
- First Aider or Fire Marshall Certification.
- NVQ Level 3 in Plant Maintenance or equivalent.
- Dependable, proactive, and safety-focused with a strong team ethic.
- Flexible and willing to step up when required.
- Experience with maintenance software or job tracking systems.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high workshop standards.
Salary & Benefits
- Β£17.50/hour, 42.5-hour week (8:00am-4:30pm).
- Overtime: 1.5x after 42.5 hours; double time after 4 hours on Saturdays and all hours on Sundays.
