The Business Development Manager - Bespoke Packaging is required in Wednesbury, West Midlands for our client, a well-established and highly experienced manufacturer specialising in premium corrugated packaging solutions. This is a newly created position and represents an excellent opportunity for a commercially driven, mid-career sales professional who is genuinely motivated by winning new business. The successful candidate will be a true hunter, responsible for identifying and developing new customer opportunities rather than managing an established account portfolio.

Their products are highly bespoke, premium packaging solutions designed to form part of a customer's marketing and brand proposition. Rather than producing high-volume, generic boxes, the business works with growing and established brands to create distinctive packaging that helps products stand out at retail.

Job Overview

  • Identify, target and secure new business opportunities across the UK.
  • Develop a strong pipeline of prospective customers.
  • Take a proactive, hunter-led approach to business development, generating opportunities through prospecting, networking, referrals, market research and direct engagement.
  • Build relationships with brand owners, marketing teams, procurement professionals and other key decision makers.
  • Promote premium packaging solutions tailored specifically to each customer's requirements.
  • Understand customer branding and marketing objectives and identify opportunities where bespoke packaging can add value and differentiate their products.
  • Arrange and attend customer meetings and site visits throughout the UK.
  • Work closely with internal design, production and commercial teams to develop suitable packaging solutions and progress opportunities from initial enquiry through to sale.
  • Prepare and negotiate commercial proposals, ensuring solutions are aligned with customer requirements and commercially viable.
  • Attend relevant trade shows, networking events and industry activities to generate new leads and increase market presence.
  • Maintain accurate records of prospects, opportunities and sales activity through the company's internal systems.
  • Take ownership of the full new-business sales process, from initial prospecting through to securing the order and establishing the relationship.
  • Develop a long-term strategy for growing sales and expanding the company's customer base.

Job Requirements

  • Proven experience in business development, new business sales or B2B sales, ideally within packaging, print, manufacturing or a related industry.
  • A genuine hunter mentality, with a demonstrable track record of generating and winning new business.
  • Experience selling a premium, bespoke or technically specified product/service would be highly advantageous.
  • Packaging experience is preferred, but candidates from related areas such as flexible packaging, labels, print or other specialist packaging sectors will also be considered.
  • Commercially confident with the ability to sell value rather than simply compete on price.
  • Strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills.
  • Comfortable engaging with senior decision makers and developing relationships from cold opportunities.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently in a field-based role.
  • Willingness to travel extensively throughout the UK.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage a pipeline of multiple new-business opportunities.
  • Candidates should be motivated by achieving ambitious sales targets and earning significant commission.

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary: £35,000 - £55,000 dependent on experience.
  • Commission: Industry-leading, open-ended commission structure designed to strongly reward new business performance.
  • Car allowance: Approximately £8,000.
  • Holiday entitlement: To be confirmed.
  • Pension: To be confirmed.
  • Working hours: Monday to Friday, to be confirmed.
  • Working arrangement: Predominantly field based with UK-wide travel.
  • Progression: Excellent opportunity to progress into a more senior commercial position as the business and sales function grows.
