Mechanical Design Engineer required for a specialist manufacturer of bespoke engineered products based in the Newcastle-under-Lyme area. This position is responsible for the design and development of bespoke mechanical products using SolidWorks, supporting projects from initial concept through to manufacture. The role will involve producing detailed 3D models and manufacturing drawings, ordering components, liaising with production and suppliers, and working closely within a small design office to deliver high-quality engineering solutions.

Duties and responsibilities include:

Job Overview:

  • Responsible for the design and development of bespoke mechanical products using SolidWorks
  • Producing 3D CAD models, detailed manufacturing drawings and assembly drawings
  • Designing components and assemblies in line with customer and manufacturing requirements
  • Preparing Bills of Materials (BOMs) and engineering documentation
  • Ordering purchased components and liaising with suppliers to ensure parts are available for production
  • Supporting manufacturing and assembly teams with technical queries and design modifications where required
  • Working closely with colleagues within the drawing office to deliver projects on schedule
  • Reviewing designs to ensure functionality, manufacturability and cost-effectiveness
  • Maintaining engineering documentation and revision control
  • Assisting with product improvements and continuous development of existing designs
  • Liaising with internal departments to ensure projects progress efficiently from design through manufacture
  • Providing regular updates on project progress to management
  • Complying with all company Quality, Environmental and Health & Safety procedures

Job Requirements:

  • Previous experience within a Mechanical Design Engineer or Design Engineer position
  • Proficient in SolidWorks CAD software
  • Experience producing detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation
  • Experience preparing Bills of Materials
  • Experience ordering engineering components or liaising with suppliers
  • Good understanding of manufacturing processes and design for manufacture principles
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively within a small engineering team
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently

Desirable:

  • Experience designing bespoke engineered products
  • Knowledge of fabrication and manufacturing processes

Qualifications:

  • HNC/HND or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline preferred
  • Minimum 3 years' experience within a Mechanical Design Engineer position
  • SolidWorks experience essential
  • Full UK Driving Licence beneficial

Salary & Benefits:

  • Salary: £30,000 - £40,000 (DOE)
  • Hours: Monday-Friday, 09:00-17:00
