Estimator Job Overview

  • Prepare accurate and competitive tenders from construction drawings, specifications and Bills of Quantities
  • Produce detailed rates from first principles
  • Measure and take off quantities from construction drawings
  • Manage multiple tenders simultaneously at different stages
  • Lead target price reviews and tender review meetings
  • Obtain and evaluate quotations from suppliers and subcontractors
  • Liaise with clients, consultants and design teams to obtain additional information
  • Identify commercial risks, opportunities and value-engineering solutions
  • Attend pre-contract and post-contract meetings
  • Provide commercial insight throughout the tender process
  • Present tender information and recommendations to senior management
  • Complete detailed handovers of successful tenders to the construction delivery team

Estimator Job Requirements

  • At least three years' estimating experience within groundworks and/or reinforced concrete structures
  • Previous experience preparing tenders from first principles
  • Demonstrable experience tendering for construction or civil engineering packages
  • Experience working on projects valued up to approximately £30 million
  • Strong understanding of construction methods, sequencing and technology
  • Confident measuring quantities and interpreting technical drawings
  • Strong commercial awareness and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills
  • Ability to manage several tenders and competing deadlines
  • Proactive, organised and capable of working independently
  • Based within a commutable distance of Barnsley
