An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Mechanical Design Manager to join a leading hydraulics engineering company based in Knowsley. The successful candidate will oversee a small design team and take a hands-on role using SolidWorks to deliver high-quality mechanical and hydraulic system designs. This role involves close collaboration with purchasing and production to ensure on-time, efficient project delivery.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the mechanical design function, overseeing a small team of four design engineers (2 on-site, 1 part-time, 1 remote).
- Undertake hands-on design work using SolidWorks, ensuring all project designs meet technical standards, quality, and delivery schedules.
- Review and check design outputs to ensure accuracy, functionality, and on-time completion.
- Liaise closely with the Purchasing Department to ensure timely delivery of components and materials.
- Work alongside the Production Manager to support manufacturing processes, resolve design-related issues, and ensure smooth production handovers.
- Participate in daily production meetings, providing design updates and supporting cross-functional communication.
- Manage design documentation, engineering change requests, and adherence to internal procedures and standards.
- Drive continuous improvement within the design team to enhance efficiency, quality, and performance.
- Act as a technical point of contact for design-related issues and provide guidance to junior engineers.
Requirements
- Proven experience in a mechanical design management or senior design engineer role within a manufacturing or engineering environment.
- Strong 3D CAD design skills, ideally using SolidWorks.
- Background in fluid power or hydraulic systems design advantageous, though not essential.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, ensuring design quality and timely delivery.
- Strong understanding of engineering principles, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacture.
- A proactive, hands-on approach with a focus on teamwork and problem-solving.
Salary & Benefits
- Salary: £50,000 - £60,000 (depending on experience)
