We are working with a client to recruit a Workshop Manager to lead their growing team of Workshop Fitters. This is a hands-on engineering management role with responsibility for the internal workshop, which looks after the repair, maintenance and availability of a range of equipment, including trailers, skeletal trailers, containers and other site equipment. We’re particularly interested in speaking to people from a fabrication and welding, mechanical engineering or vehicle/automotive background. You may currently be working as a Workshop Supervisor, Chargehand, Senior Technician, Fabricator, Welder, Vehicle Mechanic or Engineer and be looking for the next step into management. An HND or higher equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or Electromechanics would be advantageous, although equivalent demonstrable engineering experience will also be considered. A time-served apprenticeship would also be beneficial. Strong hands-on welding experience is important for this role. The Role You will take overall responsibility for the day-to-day running of the workshop, leading and developing a growing team of technicians and ensuring workloads are planned and completed safely, efficiently and to a high standard. You will oversee repairs and planned maintenance, ensuring equipment is maintained in line with statutory requirements such as LOLER and PUWER, manufacturer recommendations and company procedures. You will work closely with the operational team to maximise equipment availability and minimise disruption. The role will also involve improving workshop processes and procedures, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, quality, safety and cost control, as well as supporting wider engineering and infrastructure projects. You will be responsible for workshop records and administration, quality checks, inductions and contractor control, as well as supporting the training and development of apprentices and existing team members. About You We are looking for someone with a strong practical engineering background who understands how a busy workshop operates and is confident leading a team. Your background could be in fabrication and welding, mechanical engineering, vehicle/automotive mechanics, plant, heavy equipment or industrial maintenance. The most important thing is that you have strong engineering experience, good welding skills and the ability to manage people and workloads effectively. You will also need a good understanding of health and safety, strong organisational and communication skills and a proactive approach to problem solving. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer, supervisor or workshop professional who is ready to take the next step into a Workshop Manager position.
