Graduate testimonial:
Dan Lomas joined Bender in September 2021 and successfully completed a 2 year training programme to become an innovations engineer. Dan provided following reflection to IET recently regarding his journey with Bender
\”Graduate Engineer Reflection – Dan Lomas (2021-2023)
When I joined Bender UK as a graduate engineer, I had a strong academic foundation but limited real-world experience. What followed was a journey full of challenges, learning opportunities, and personal growth that helped shape me into the engineer I am today.
When I joined Bender UK straight out of university, my only practical experience came from the controlled environment of an academic lab-where everything is designed to work perfectly. Transitioning into the graduate role at Bender was a valuable shift; I quickly learned how to apply my knowledge in real-world settings, where challenges are less predictable and solutions need to be flexible. It was in these hands-on situations that I began developing the practical skills essential to becoming a confident and capable engineer.
The role also gave me the opportunity to visit sites across a wide range of industries-from rail and air traffic control to manufacturing, healthcare, and renewable energy. Each visit deepened my understanding of how electrical infrastructure differs across sectors, and how software and monitoring solutions can be tailored to meet unique industry needs. These experiences helped shape me into a more adaptable and well-rounded engineer.
What makes the Bender graduate programme stand out is how quickly graduates become trusted members of the team. There are no passengers within the Technical Team at Bender UK. From day one, you\’re given real responsibility and encouraged to engage directly with customers-something that accelerates both technical growth and professional confidence. In fact, immediately after completing the graduate programme, I was entrusted with leading key team projects that influence the future direction of the company.
Spending time at Bender\’s headquarters in Germany also exposed me to a different working culture. It had a lasting impact on how I approach communication, collaboration, and work-life balance, and it played a big part in helping me mature as a young professional.
Most importantly, my journey at Bender has been about more than just engineering. I\’ve built meaningful professional friendships with people across different countries and industries, and I\’ve had the chance to travel throughout the UK and Europe-all while continuing to grow both technically and personally.\”
