Overview
Location: Preston, Lancashire (HMP site)
We’re working with a secure facility in Preston that requires experienced Registered Nurses (RGN or RMN) to join the healthcare team on a locum basis. This is a dynamic role that involves supporting the physical and mental wellbeing of individuals in custody, often with complex and varied needs.
Role details
Rate: £30–£35 per hour (depending on shift type and experience)
Contract: Ongoing locum position (initial 3–6 months)
Shifts: Flexible options – days, nights, and weekends available
Responsibilities
- Delivering hands-on nursing care across a range of clinical areas
- Carrying out assessments, managing medications, and responding to urgent health concerns
- Supporting patients with long-term conditions, substance misuse, or acute mental health issues
- Working as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside prison staff, GPs, and other healthcare professionals
- Maintaining clear and accurate clinical records in line with professional standards
Essential criteria
- NMC registration as a Registered Nurse (Adult or Mental Health)
- Previous experience in custodial, forensic, community, or emergency care settings is beneficial
- Prison clearance (CTC or enhanced DBS with vetting) is preferred – but we can support new applications
- Confident managing challenging situations and working autonomously
- Able to commit to at least two shifts per week
