Brent Council is offering an initial temporary contract of 3‑6 months, with the possibility of extension or permanent employment for the right candidate. The role is an Elective Home Education Officer located at HA9 0FJ (Hybrid) and includes a negotiable rate of pay dependent upon experience.
Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership and high‑quality advice in Elective Home Education for the School Attendance Service, Inclusion and Children, Young People & Community Development and ensure all children of compulsory school age receive suitable education.
- Develop excellent working relationships with headteachers and schools in relation to EHE; monitor reasons parents choose home education and advise schools on correct procedures.
- Work closely and lead on cases with schools, Admissions, Inclusion, Family Solutions, Social Care and the BSAS Children Missing Education Officer when concerns arise about education or welfare of a child.
- Serve as an authorised officer of Brent's School Attendance Service empowered to investigate breaches under the Education Act 1996, issue penalty notices or bring legal proceedings against parents if they fail to provide an education.
- Serve notices on parents under section 437 of the Education Act 1996 when a child is not receiving suitable education.
- Serve parents with a school attendance order, requiring a child to become a registered pupil at a school named in the order.
- Prepare detailed evidence outlining the case for prosecution, including a section 9 witness statement, for breach of School Attendance Orders under section 443 of the Education Act 1996.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience within an education welfare/child employment setting.
- Experience managing the competing demands of a wide and varied caseload.
- Experience in the use of MS Office applications and maintaining database records.
