Isle of Wight Council is seeking an experienced and warranted Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) to join its dedicated Adult Social Care and Community Mental Health Service on an ongoing contract basis. This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified AMHP looking for a flexible contract role focused primarily on Mental Health Act work, with minimal involvement in wider social work case management responsibilities.
Working within a supportive and experienced Community Mental Health Team and AMHP Service, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality statutory mental health interventions and ensuring individuals receive appropriate support and protection under the Mental Health Act.
The Role
As an Approved Mental Health Professional, you will be responsible for undertaking Mental Health Act assessments and carrying out the statutory duties associated with the AMHP role. You will work collaboratively with health professionals, service users, carers, and partner agencies to ensure lawful, person-centred, and outcome-focused decision-making. The role requires flexibility to support both office-hours and out-of-hours AMHP services as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake Mental Health Act assessments in accordance with current legislation, guidance, and best practice.
- Exercise statutory AMHP duties under the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended).
- Work closely with Community Mental Health Teams, medical practitioners, inpatient services, and partner agencies.
- Coordinate and lead Mental Health Act assessment processes, ensuring decisions are legally robust and person-centred.
- Maintain accurate case records and assessment documentation.
- Contribute to safeguarding and risk management processes where required.
- Participate in AMHP duty arrangements, including occasional out-of-hours work.
- Provide professional advice and guidance regarding Mental Health Act responsibilities.
- Work collaboratively to achieve positive outcomes for adults experiencing mental health difficulties.
Requirements
Essential
- Qualified Social Worker, Occupational Therapist, Mental Health Nurse, or Psychologist with a recognised AMHP qualification.
- Current warranted Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) status.
- Significant experience undertaking Mental Health Act assessments.
- Strong working knowledge of:
- Mental Health Act 1983
- Mental Capacity Act
- Care Act 2014
- Human Rights legislation
- Safeguarding Adults procedures
- Excellent assessment, decision-making, and report-writing skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
- Enhanced DBS clearance.
Desirable
- Previous Local Authority Adult Social Care experience.
- Experience working within Community Mental Health Teams.
- Experience participating in AMHP duty rotas and out-of-hours services.
