As Chief Engineer at Royal Scotsman, a Belmond Train, you will oversee all engineering and maintenance, ensuring safe and successful operation according to ORR and National Rail standards. This leadership role involves managing the engineering team, contractors, and budgets. You will be responsible for forecasting and delivering all maintenance, developing strategic plans for optimal product condition, and managing supply chains and sustainability initiatives. You will foster clear communication with all stakeholders, maintain compliance with company policies, and champion continuous improvement, all while ensuring efficient resource utilization and a strong focus on safety and operational excellence.
Primary Responsibilities
- Overall Maintenance and Operations: Taking full control of all maintenance and engineering required to safely maintain and operate the Royal Scotsman. This involves managing employees, contractors, and support services in line with budget and operational standards.
- Compliance and Standards: Ensuring the product is maintained and operated in line with ORR (Office of Rail and Road) and National Railway Group standards and participating in projects and improvement programs.
- Maintenance Management: Ensuring accurate forecasting and delivery of all required preventative and mandatory maintenance, and compiling equipment information, performance metrics, and maintenance histories to make recommendations for improvements.
- Team and Contractor Management: Managing internal and external staff, contractors, and project managers for successful setup and operation.
- Strategic Planning: Devising and managing a strategy to maintain the product in optimal condition around the planned operating schedule.
- Financial and Resource Management: Developing and managing annual budgets, supply chains, and controlling wastage and utility economy.
- Sustainability: Ensuring the product sustainability plan is developed and delivered in line with agreed goals and standards.
- Communication and Collaboration: Ensuring clear communication and workflow between the product and ECM (Entity in Charge of Maintenance), liaising with other departments, and managing external suppliers.
Requirements
- Relevant management or field/industry related diploma or chartered status.
- Engineering experience within the heritage rail industry and knowledge of the associated heritage railway group standards - advantageous.
- Experience of developing and reviewing maintenance and overhaul documentation.
- A high level of professionalism and confidentiality/discretion.
- High level of integrity and trustworthiness.
- Ability to work long and irregular shifts.
- Ability to travel.
- Working knowledge of MS Office.
