The Principal Fire Consultant is a senior technical and leadership position responsible for delivering expert fire safety consultancy services across complex, high-risk projects. This role combines technical authority, project oversight, and client engagement, while contributing to business growth and ensuring compliance with fire safety legislation, standards, and best practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert advice and technical leadership on fire safety design and risk management for high-risk and complex buildings.
  • Develop comprehensive safety case reports and other technical documentation to support fire safety compliance.
  • Manage compliance notices, enforcement orders, and related client interactions to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee projects, providing guidance to multidisciplinary teams and ensuring technical excellence in deliverables.
  • Support the Head of Department in auditing, quality control, and continuous improvement of reports and consultancy processes.
  • Mentor and develop the fire safety team, fostering technical growth and capability within the department.
  • Contribute to business development by maintaining strong client relationships and identifying new opportunities for consultancy services.

People & Mentoring

  • Line manages, mentor, and technically develop fire consultants and engineers.
  • Support professional development pathways (e.g. IFE, SFPE, CEng, IEng).
  • Promote a culture of technical excellence, quality, and continuous improvement.

Quality, Risk & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with internal quality management systems.
  • Identify and manage technical and commercial risks.
  • Support peer reviews and lessons-learned processes.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging legislation and industry trends.

Project Delivery

  • Lead and oversee delivery of complex and high-risk projects across multiple sectors.
  • Manage technical inputs from junior and senior consultants.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and to agreed quality standards.
  • Attend and lead client, design team, and regulatory authority meetings.
  • Support negotiation with Approving Authorities, Building Control, Fire and Rescue Services.

Client & Stakeholder Management

  • Act as a trusted advisor to clients, developers, architects, and contractors.
  • Build and maintain long-term client relationships.
  • Provide clear, authoritative advice in both written reports and verbal presentations.
  • Support clients through planning, design, construction, and occupation stages.

Business Development

  • Contribute to work winning, fee proposals, and bid submissions.
  • Identify new business opportunities and support strategic growth of the fire consultancy offering.
  • Represent the company at industry events, conferences, and client meetings.

What does it take?

Essential:

  • Extensive experience in fire engineering or fire safety consultancy.
  • Proven track record delivering complex fire strategies and engineered solutions.
  • Strong understanding of fire safety legislation and regulatory processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience leading teams and managing projects.
  • Ability to engage confidently with senior stakeholders and regulators.
  • Knowledge of the Building Safety Act and associated Regulations and guidance.

Desirable:

  • Chartered status or working towards (e.g. CEng, IEng, MIFireE, MSFPE).
  • Experience across multiple sectors (residential, commercial, healthcare, transport, industrial, etc.).
  • Knowledge of international codes and standards.
  • Experience providing expert witness or third-party review services.

Qualifications:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Fire Engineering, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Relevant professional memberships.

Working arrangements:
