School Caretaker at The Sir John Colfox Academy – Bridport

Join Bellrock Group as a School Caretaker at The Sir John Colfox Academy. The caretaker will be responsible for the maintenance, presentation and security of the site buildings, observing health and safety regulations. The post holder is required to report all major defects and issues to the appropriate line manager. The caretaker will also oversee all TPI bookings, provide use of facilities where necessary, and develop harmonious relationships with all users of the building.

Location: Sir John Colfox School, Bridport, Dorset

Hours: 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 10:30 am – 6:30 pm with occasional weekend work)

Salary: £26,130 per annum

Key Accountabilities

  • Ensure equipment used by care‑taking staff is validated and is in a safe and working condition and support the cleaning staff to undertake the same responsibility.
  • Provide access to the site’s first aid facilities, equipment and telephone.
  • Test fire alarms in accordance with site and company procedures.
  • Comply with building emergency procedures with respect to evacuation, fire, bombs etc.
  • Monitor health and safety standards, ensuring access and egress routes, hazard warnings and emergency instructions are displayed and not obstructed.
  • Ensure the building is fully fitted with fire appliances, which are accessible and undamaged, liaising with the line manager to rectify deficiencies.
  • Ensure caretaking and maintenance staff and subcontractors comply with all health and safety regulations.
  • Maintain an accident book for the caretaking/maintenance team.
  • Open and close premises, facilities and grounds to meet routine and non‑routine requirements.
  • Supervise heating plant operation, maintaining adequate temperatures and hot water supply.
  • Operate electricity, water and heating systems to specified standards.
  • Carry out emergency repairs to maintain building security.
  • Implement security procedures, including alarm activation/deactivation, inspections and liaising with police and authorities.
  • Keep hard‑surfaced areas free of weeds and litter, and ensure drain gullies and sinks remain clean.
  • Perform routine inspections on ancillary equipment (pools, sewage systems, air conditioning, etc.) as applicable.
  • Clean windows when required.
  • Handle occasional non‑routine cleaning tasks such as spillages.
  • Sprinkle rock salt on pathways, driveways, steps, and play areas during adverse weather.
  • Remove graffiti from outside walls where practicable.
  • Paint and decorate doors, windows and woodwork.
  • Perform any other duties reasonably required within the nature of the role.
