The Role
We are seeking an experienced Technical Manager to join our Manchester team and lead the technical delivery of our design function.
This is a senior position, responsible for providing technical leadership and oversight across multiple projects, primarily within cladding remediation, facade replacement, industrial new-build and refurbishment.
Working closely with our Design Managers, project teams, external consultants and senior management, you will be responsible for ensuring designs are technically sound, compliant, coordinated and deliverable.
You will play a key role in reviewing and challenging design submissions, resolving complex technical issues and driving consistency and quality across the design process.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing technical leadership, guidance and support to the Design Management team across multiple projects.
- Reviewing and critically assessing design submissions, drawings, specifications and technical information to ensure accuracy, compliance and buildability.
- Overseeing the design process from pre-construction through to project completion, ensuring technical requirements and programme deadlines are met.
- Identifying design risks, discrepancies and opportunities, challenging proposals and recommending practical solutions.
- Ensuring designs comply with relevant Building Regulations, British Standards, fire safety requirements and contractual obligations.
- Working closely with Design Managers to monitor design progress, resolve outstanding technical queries and ensure information is issued in line with project programmes.
- Leading technical discussions and design review meetings with internal teams, clients, architects, engineers and external consultants.
- Providing technical support to the Estimating, Commercial and Operational teams during tendering, pre-construction and project delivery.
- Reviewing the coordination of architectural, structural and specialist subcontractor designs to identify and resolve potential clashes or inconsistencies.
- Overseeing technical aspects of Building Safety Regulator submissions, Gateway requirements and Golden Thread documentation where applicable.
- Supporting the development and implementation of consistent design management procedures, quality standards and best practices across the business.
- Providing guidance and mentoring to Design Managers, supporting their technical development and helping to improve overall team performance.
- Attending site visits and inspections where required to review technical issues and support project delivery.
Who We’re Looking For
- Significant experience in a senior technical or design management role within the construction industry, ideally with a main contractor.
- Strong technical background in facade systems, cladding, external wall systems or structural design.
- Proven ability to lead technical design reviews, challenge consultant submissions and resolve complex design issues.
- Experience overseeing the technical aspects of multiple construction projects simultaneously.
- Excellent understanding of UK Building Regulations, British Standards, fire safety legislation and relevant industry guidance.
- Knowledge of the Building Safety Act, Building Safety Regulator requirements and Golden Thread processes.
- Strong understanding of design coordination, construction methodologies, material specifications and buildability.
- Experience working with architects, structural engineers, specialist designers and subcontractors.
- A degree in Architecture, Architectural Technology, Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Microsoft Office and construction document management systems, ideally Procore.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the confidence to question designs and make informed technical decisions.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to explain complex technical matters clearly.
- Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities.
- A proactive, collaborative approach with the ability to provide technical leadership and support to others.
- Full UK driving licence preferred, with flexibility to visit projects across the UK when required.
