Fast growing business based in the Oldham area requires a Freight Operator as a result of growth in the business. This role seeks an experienced freight professional who enjoys the operational side of logistics but also has the personality and commercial instinct to build relationships, spot opportunities and help grow business. Our client is a growing multimodal freight and logistics business based in Oldham, providing Ocean, Air, European Road Freight and Worldwide Shipping solutions.

They are looking for someone who genuinely understands freight forwarding and can confidently manage shipments from booking through to final delivery but this isn't just an operations role. We want someone who can talk to customers, develop accounts and isn't afraid to pick up the phone and create new opportunities.

What will you be doing? You'll have a varied role combining freight operations, customer management and business development, including:

  • Managing Ocean, Air and European Road freight shipments from booking to delivery
  • Arranging collections, deliveries and overseas movements
  • Liaising with customers, carriers, hauliers and overseas agents
  • Preparing and managing shipping and customs documentation
  • Monitoring shipments and proactively keeping customers updated
  • Resolving operational issues quickly and professionally
  • Building strong relationships with existing customers
  • Identifying additional freight opportunities within current accounts
  • Following up enquiries, quotes and potential new business
  • Proactively approaching prospective customers and helping generate new accounts
  • Producing competitive freight quotations and following them through
  • Working closely with the Directors and wider team to help grow the business
  • Keeping systems, shipment information and customer records accurate and up to date

Who are we looking for? First and foremost, you need to know freight. You'll ideally have:

  • Previous freight forwarding experience
  • Good multimodal knowledge across Road, Air and/or Ocean Freight
  • Experience managing shipments from start to finish
  • A good understanding of freight documentation and customs processes
  • Strong customer service and relationship-building skills
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to recognise a sales opportunity
  • Confidence speaking to existing and prospective customers
  • The personality to build rapport and turn conversations into business
  • Excellent organisation and attention to detail
  • A proactive, energetic approach

You don't necessarily need to be a polished freight salesperson already. If you're an experienced freight operator who has strong customer relationships, enjoys the commercial side and would like the opportunity to develop into a more sales-focused position, we'd really like to hear from you. In return this role will offer development and progression to the right person.
