About the role
We are looking for a mature, reliable and compassionate female support worker/personal assistant to provide person-centred support to Sam, a mother with autism. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who understands autism and is able to provide patient, respectful and empowering support. An understanding of cultural needs and sensitivity is essential, as finding the right match is important to maintaining a successful and consistent support package.
The purpose of the role is to support Sam to develop her confidence and independence, manage everyday responsibilities, maintain her health and wellbeing, and continue to enjoy her role as a mum. The successful candidate will support Sam to have her views, wishes and voice heard, while encouraging her to develop skills and confidence rather than doing things for her.
Support may include:
- Helping Sam to communicate her views, wishes and preferences with confidence.
- Supporting her to prepare for and attend meetings, including meetings at her children's school.
- Providing advocacy-style support so that Sam can understand what is being discussed and communicate her views.
- Supporting Sam with emails, letters, bills, appointments and telephone calls.
- Helping her develop skills to manage correspondence and administrative tasks more independently.
- Supporting healthy nutrition, including preparing shopping lists, completing weekly food shopping and batch cooking where required.
- Supporting Sam to maintain a safe, habitable and comfortable home environment.
- Encouraging Sam to access the community and take part in enjoyable activities.
- Supporting her to build confidence so that she can eventually return to attending Friday prayers when she feels ready.
- Encouraging meaningful relationships and opportunities for social participation.
- Supporting Sam to have time for herself and maintain her emotional wellbeing.
- Promoting independence, choice and control at all times.
Advocacy and school meetings
The successful applicant must be comfortable supporting someone in meetings while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and ensuring that Sam remains at the centre of decision-making.
The outcomes we want to achieve
The support is designed around Sam's individual goals and the things that are important to her:
- Supporting Sam to maintain existing relationships, strengthen family relationships and develop new social connections.
- Supporting Sam to participate in meaningful activities and access her community, including working towards confidently attending Friday prayers.
- Supporting Sam to maintain a safe, comfortable and habitable home environment.
- Supporting Sam to build confidence, recognise her strengths, develop aspirations and have the opportunity to work towards her goals.
- Supporting Sam with nutrition, emotional wellbeing, confidence and access to activities that promote good physical and mental health.
