Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Underwriting Manager to join our Believe Loans operation. This role is ideal for a proven people leader with a strong background in management, coaching, and team development, who can build and maintain a high‑performing underwriting function through effective leadership and operational oversight.

While prior experience in second charge underwriting is beneficial, it is not essential. You will be supported by knowledgeable Team Leaders who provide day‑to‑day expertise on lender criteria and case complexity. Your focus will be on creating the conditions for success – setting clear expectations, developing capability, driving performance, and ensuring underwriting teams operate efficiently, compliantly, and consistently.

Working closely with the Operations Manager and senior stakeholders, you will take ownership of team performance, pipeline flow, and service delivery. You will play a key role in shaping a positive, accountable culture, improving processes, and enabling Case Managers to deliver high‑quality outcomes for customers and brokers in a fast‑paced lending environment.

This role requires a confident leader who thrives in a hands‑on management position, balances operational delivery with people development, and is motivated by building strong teams that consistently perform at a high level.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and optimise underwriting pipelines, ensuring cases are progressed efficiently from submission to completion.
• Work closely with the Operations Manager and Team Leaders to maintain throughput, manage capacity, and meet SLAs and KPIs.
• Maintain hands‑on oversight of individual pipelines, ensuring all cases are up to date and aligned with lender criteria and industry changes.
• Ensure offers and acceptances of terms are received promptly and accurately checked against application data and ESIS documentation.
• Act as a point of escalation for complex cases, general enquiries, and operational issues.
• Maintain strong knowledge of the second charge mortgage market, lender criteria, and product USPs.
• Lead, motivate, and develop underwriting and case management teams to deliver high performance and consistent service levels.
• Promote a collaborative, customer‑focused culture aligned with Believe Money Group’s values and objectives.
• Work closely with Quality Assurance and Operational Support to ensure files meet compliance, regulatory, and network standards.
• Ensure all cases are compliant prior to submission to the Network and fully aligned with Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) principles.
• Partner with the Protection team to ensure customers receive appropriate protection discussions and outcomes.
• Support and develop team members through coaching, monthly reviews, and structured feedback.
• Contribute to the development and improvement of processes, procedures, and standardisation to drive efficiency and quality.
• Maintain accurate records and business logs within the CRM system, including vulnerable customer tracking.
• Provide input into CRM enhancements, operational tooling, and reporting to support better decision‑making.
• Support senior management with business growth initiatives, including recruitment, onboarding, and team structure planning.
• Manage shift patterns, holidays, and resourcing to ensure adequate operational coverage.
• Deputise for the Operations Manager where required, leading team meetings and operational updates.
• Build and maintain strong lender relationships, working collaboratively to resolve issues and improve outcomes.
• Produce management reports and performance insights when required.
• Promote a respectful, inclusive working environment in line with company HR policies and procedures.

Required Skills and Experience

• Proven experience in an Underwriting Manager or Senior Underwriting role within second charge mortgages or specialist lending.
• Strong understanding of lender criteria, compliance requirements, and mortgage market dynamics.
• Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop high‑performing operational teams.
• Experience managing pipelines, workloads, and performance in a fast‑paced environment.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

• Experience working closely with protection teams and cross‑sell processes.
• Exposure to CRM optimisation, reporting, or operational tooling improvements.
• Involvement in business change, growth, or transformation initiatives.
• Strong understanding of TCF principles and FCA regulatory expectations.
