There are currently five permanent, full-time posts. All applications for employment are considered strictly on the basis of merit. The role involves being responsible to the OSS Supervisor or other appropriate officer to drive and maintain the allocated vehicle, including but not restricted to van, trailer, tractor, and ride-on mower. Responsibilities include maintaining the orderly condition of all locations, such as sweeping, hoeing, raking, mowing, edging, grass cutting, hedge cutting, pruning, and removing litter, rubbish, and hazardous materials. Other cultural operations may include planting trees, shrubs, and plants.

Additionally, the role requires assisting with the inspection of playgrounds, play equipment, and park furniture, as well as undertaking litter collection duties associated with these facilities to ensure they are maintained to set quality and safety standards.

About the department: With over 1,400 staff, the City and Neighbourhood Services Department delivers frontline services essential to the daily lives of Belfast residents. This includes:

  • Open Space & Street Scene – Managing parks, green spaces, and street cleansing operations.
  • Neighbourhood Development & Regeneration – Overseeing community centres, health and wellbeing initiatives, active living, and community safety.
  • Regulatory & City Services – Providing environmental health services, dog and pest control, port health, emergency planning, and bereavement services.
  • Strategic Waste Management – Leading waste collection, recycling, and fleet management.
