Job Description

Principal Mechanical Design Engineer

East Midlands, UK

Advanced Engineering & Clean-Tech Machinery

Permanent

Hybrid

Are you an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer looking to take the lead on complex, cutting-edge engineering projects? We’re supporting a pioneering engineering organisation developing next-generation turbomachinery and high-temperature process systems that are redefining industrial performance. They are now seeking a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to lead major design workstreams and influence the mechanical architecture of state-of-the-art machinery.

The Opportunity

In this senior position, you’ll own the mechanical design of advanced rotating equipment and high-temperature static structures. You’ll define design requirements, drive design standards, and help shape engineering processes for a new era of industrial machinery. This role offers genuine technical challenge, autonomy, and the chance to make a meaningful impact on the future of high-performance engineering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design activities for complex turbomachinery components
  • Produce detailed product definition using Siemens NX & Teamcenter PLM
  • Carry out and oversee 1D calculations, 2D analysis, and 3D FEA (thermal, structural, modal, fatigue)
  • Review and approve design work from other engineers
  • Define subsystem requirements and ensure robust mechanical architecture
  • Improve engineering tools, design methods, and best practices
  • Present updates to senior stakeholders and mentor junior engineers
  • Ensure compliance with BS, ASME, API, ISO and other relevant standards

What You’ll Bring

  • 7+ years’ experience in mechanical design
  • Strong background in turbomachinery and/or high-temperature structural components
  • Expertise in high-temperature alloys (nickel-based, stainless steels, etc.)
  • Thermo-mechanical design experience, including fatigue and life assessment
  • First-principles approach with strong analytical capability
  • Proficiency in Siemens NX & Teamcenter PLM
  • Strong communication and technical reporting skills

Beneficial:

  • Degree in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering (higher degree preferred)
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards it
  • Experience in fast-paced R&D or developing emerging technologies
  • Python or similar coding for workflow automation

Why Join?

You’ll be part of a forward-thinking engineering business driving innovation in advanced machinery. Expect:

  • Complex, meaningful engineering challenges
  • Influence over system architecture and design standards
  • A collaborative, international engineering environment
  • Opportunity to help shape next-generation, cutting edge industrial technology
