Are you an experienced Senior C&I Engineer / Instrumentation Engineer looking to take ownership of complex engineering projects and lead high-performing technical teams? Our client is seeking a talented Principal Instrumentation Engineer to play a pivotal role in delivering critical design solutions across the full engineering lifecycle, from tendering through to project close-out.

Role Overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled Principal Control and Instrumentation Engineer to combine technical leadership with hands-on engineering expertise. You will be responsible for managing technical resources, coordinating multidisciplinary interfaces, and ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards. Acting as a key point of contact for discipline-related matters, you will help drive performance, mentor engineers, and resolve complex engineering challenges whilst maintaining strong client and stakeholder relationships.

Key Responsibilities

  • You will lead and coordinate C&I engineering activities across multiple projects, managing technical teams to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Overseeing design production, checking and approval activities, managing technical interfaces, monitoring project performance through KPIs and reporting.
  • Supporting risk, opportunity and change management processes.
  • You will also contribute to resource planning, budget management, compliance activities, and the ongoing development of engineering personnel through mentoring and line management responsibilities.

Essential Requirements

  • Degree qualified in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation installation requirements within hazardous and potentially explosive environments.
  • Professional registration such as Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng).
  • Extensive engineering design experience across the full project lifecycle.
  • Proven experience specifying and designing Safety Instrumented Systems in accordance with IEC 61511 and IEC 61508.
  • Strong leadership, line management and mentoring experience.
  • Understanding of CE marking requirements, including ATEX, PED, Low Voltage Directive, Machinery Directive and EMC Compliance.
  • Awareness of HSE requirements, risk identification and management processes.
  • Strong understanding of UK regulatory requirements, including CDM Regulations.
  • Valid safety passport or industry equivalent.
