Purpose of the Role
To ensure that the design of all new and existing machinery and machine tooling complies with the legal regulations and legislations. Working with Maintenance and manufacturing to become global technology leaders.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Undertaking design calculations for static, fatigue and finite element analyses.
- Knowledge of FEA analysis.
- Preparing detailed and schematic engineering drawings in both 3D and 2D.
- Preparing assembly drawings in both 3D and 2D along with instructions for use of equipment.
- Checking work produced by colleagues as necessary to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Maintaining comprehensive records for design calculations and drawings.
- Promote best practice and the sharing of knowledge amongst employees and other Bridon sites.
- Promote continuous Improvement activities to engineer out any repeating problems.
- From time to time may be required to work at other Bridon sites.
Apply strong mechanical science and engineering fundamentals to ensure designs are structurally sound, including:
- Understanding of stress/strain principles (tension, shear, bending)
- Awareness of deflection and loading in machine components
- Beam calculations (simply supported beams, point loads, distributed loads)
- Cantilever loading considerations
- Knowledge of material properties and selection (tensile strength, yield strength, hardness, fatigue, wear, corrosion resistance)
Design, specify and improve mechanical power transmission systems, including:
- Belt‑driven systems (pulleys, belt selection, alignment considerations)
- Gearboxes, gearbox ratios, and drive arrangements
- Shafting, couplings, bearings, and rotating equipment components
Carry out engineering calculations to support safe and reliable design decisions, including:
- Torque calculations
- Power calculations
- Gear ratio selection and speed changes
Skills & Competencies
- Degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering.
- Good working knowledge of Autodesk Inventor, 3‑D design and Autodesk Vault (document control, revision management).
- Dedicated to providing the highest quality which meets the requirements of internal/external customers.
- An analytical disposition, with strong attention to detail.
- Excellent communicator – verbally and written.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Time management.
- Intermediate Microsoft Office.
- Previous experience in design engineering.
- Experience of working and interpreting International standards.
