The Structural Design Engineer’s role is to provide design and structural analysis to support the engineering team for Flintstone products for energy markets including floating offshore wind. These products are predominantly mooring line connectors, tensioners, and accessories.

Key Activities and Responsibilities

  • The Structural Design Engineer is responsible for the development of design and analysis of new products, improving existing designs, and modifying them to meet specific project requirements.
  • Performing manual and MathCad calculations to support and verify design work.
  • Good knowledge of Finite Element Analysis is required; however, the role is to be developed with training from our existing FEA consultant who is an expert in the field.
  • Good knowledge of 3D CAD (SolidWorks is our in-house CAD software).
  • Failure mode effect and criticality analysis.
  • Report writing.
  • Checking and approving of other design engineers’ output.
  • Preparation of project design documents for presentation to clients, authorities and 3rd parties.

Qualifications & Experience Requirements

  • Minimum – BSc in mechanical engineering or similar discipline e.g. structural engineering.
  • Software: 3D CAD – SolidWorks preferred. FEA – Abaqus is what we use but use of this software is not essential. ANSYS or similar would be advantageous.
  • Minimum 3 Years experience in a similar role. All training for specific in-house work will be provided.

  • Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • 3D CAD.
  • FEA.
  • Outlook, including electronic calendar.
  • Excellent communication/interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, with attention to detail.
  • Must be able to follow instructions and work on own initiative.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to ensure tasks are prioritised appropriately.
  • Honesty, reliability, and discretion are essential as working with confidential information.
  • Understanding of fundamental engineering principles and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to work in a small team.

Desirable Specific skills/knowledge needed

  • Experience working in or designing for the offshore industry.
