About the BIT

BIT is a global research and innovation consultancy which uses deep understanding of human behaviour to improve people’s lives. We work with national, regional and local governments, businesses, foundations and charities, to tackle policy problems, often through testing and implementing simple yet powerful changes.

We have about 200 staff based in 8 countries across Europe, the Americas and Asia Pacific, and have run more than 1000 projects to date, including over 700 randomised controlled trials in dozens of countries. In addition to our own interventions, we openly share expertise and help others build capacity and skills to apply behavioural science.

We are known for our work in the public sector, and yet we do a large range of things for a wide range of clients. We design and rigorously test new ideas across a range of areas such as health, crime and education, to establish what works and what doesn’t. What does an Associate Advisor at BIT do?

As an Associate Advisor, you will work on one or a few client projects at the same time, which can span across research methods and policy domains. You may also have the opportunity to support our BIT Academy training team on an assignment basis.

You will be aligned to a specific team (known as ‘cluster’) which focuses on a range of policy domains, and may be transferred across teams to meet client needs and expand your skills and range of experience.

You will be involved in things like:

• Developing and testing practical policy solutions or intervention ideas to address social issues, informed by behavioural science.
• Conducting qualitative and desk-based research (e.g. interviews, observations, literature reviews) to inform interventions to improve policy outcomes.
• Conducting quantitative research, including data capture, cleaning, analysis and presentation/visualisation.
• Helping to plan and organise randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and other evaluations of our own interventions and for others.
• Preparing project deliverables (e.g. behavioural maps, evidence summaries, final reports, blogs and papers) for clients across public, private and 3rd sector.
• Using AI and other tools to develop excellent quality work for our clients, and understand how AI impacts the way humans engage with each other, their Governments and other companies and institutions.
• Having the potential for opportunities for international secondments to work on BIT projects abroad.

What makes a great Associate Advisor at BIT?

A great Associate Advisor is passionate about delivering excellent work to our clients, learning new things every day, and helping spread the word about the impact of behavioural science.

While we are looking for candidates who may already have some of the skills listed below, we will provide training and development support to fill in any gaps to give you a solid foundation in being an all-round behavioural science researcher/ consultant.

Behavioural science. You will have a passion for how humans behave, and be able to explain the implications of theoretical concepts such as defaults, loss aversion and social norms.

Public policy interest. You will have explored areas of public policy, considered the literature and the contemporary context, and learnt to consider all sides of an argument, e.g. on topical issues related to Crime and Security, Employment and Productivity, Healthcare, Education, online behaviours. You will think about what makes some policies effective and others impractical.

Qualitative research design. You will understand that people may experience a problem differently depending on their context. You will understand the needs of different types of people, including the most vulnerable, and will adapt your approach accordingly. You will know how to spot patterns, as well as highlight where there is a range of experiences.

Robust quant skills. Empiricism is a key strength of BIT. A lot of our work involves analysing data and drawing out conclusions. While not everyone is a quant research expert, you will have a solid numerical and analytic skill set, understanding of ‘causality’ and statistical reasoning. You will know that just because sales of sunglasses and ice creams increase at the same time, one does not cause the other. You will be able to describe how to run a test to prove this.

Ethical AI use. There is a huge potential to use AI to deliver better behavioural insights. You will use these tools in an appropriate, and ethical, way. You will understand the power and the limitations of using such tools.

Clear and convincing communications. You will explain complex topics in simple terms both verbally and in writing, using AI to assist you. You will help facilitate workshops or give presentations.

Time management and team working. You will manage your own time and work well in a diverse team to produce high-quality work within a fast time frame. You will know what level of accuracy is required to answer the client’s research question; when to go deeper, and when to close out lines of enquiry.

Curiosity and kindness. We are a geeky bunch of people, who love asking questions about how things work, and how things can be improved.
