ABOUT BEEN THERE: Been There is a charity that provides peer mentoring, connecting people aged 18 and over with a vetted and trained mentor to help with any body image issues they may be experiencing. This gives them the opportunity to speak to someone who has ‘Been There’ themselves. Our Mentors are here to support, empower and, most importantly, listen. As a small but growing charity, we rely on committed trustees who can take an active, hands-on approach to help guide our financial and strategic growth. The Treasurer is a key member of the Board of Trustees and will provide leadership and oversight for the charity’s finances. This is a governance role, but, as a small charity, we require Trustees to be slightly more hands-on, particularly in overseeing financial processes, supporting the bookkeeper, and contributing to strategic financial decision-making. The Treasurer ensures that the charity’s finances are managed effectively, transparently, and in line with statutory and regulatory requirements.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Financial Oversight: Oversee and present budgets, accounts, and financial statements to the Board in a clear and understandable manner. Actively review financial records and provide guidance to the bookkeeper to ensure robust financial processes.
  • Strategic Financial Planning: Work closely with the Board and CEO to ensure financial strategies and decisions are fully integrated into the charity’s strategic plans.
  • Compliance and Risk Management: Ensure appropriate accounting procedures and internal controls are in place to safeguard the charity’s assets. Monitor and manage financial risk proactively.
  • Statutory Reporting: Ensure compliance with all legal and statutory financial reporting requirements, including tracking restricted grants and reserves.
  • Audit and Financial Analysis: Liaise with auditors, reviewing and interpreting financial reports and audits, providing clear and practical analysis to inform decision-making.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting: Take an active role in developing, reviewing, and monitoring the charity’s annual budget and financial forecasts.
  • Bookkeeping Oversight and Support: Act as the trustee lead for the charity’s bookkeeper, providing guidance, support, and hands-on oversight to ensure accurate records, timely reporting, and strong financial controls.
  • Fundraising Support: Support the charity’s fundraising efforts by advising on financial viability, monitoring income against targets, and helping ensure long-term sustainability.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & UNDERSTANDING

Individuals are sought who have a strong empathy with body image issues and related mental health concerns. We are particularly interested in candidates who combine financial expertise with a genuine interest in the wellbeing of people and are motivated by Been There’s mission and ambitions.

Experience: Minimum 5 years’ professional experience in finance, accounting, or a related field, with a strong understanding of charity finance, governance, and trustee responsibilities.

Qualifications: A recognised accounting qualification (e.g., ACA, ACCA, CIMA) is highly desirable but not essential.

Skills: Excellent financial and analytical skills, with strategic thinking and the ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.

Commitment: Ability to commit approximately 2–3 hours per week on average, including attendance at quarterly board meetings, preparation work, and involvement in specific projects. Flexibility to spend additional time during peak periods, such as year-end accounts, audit, or budget planning.

Location and Availability: Trustees are expected to attend quarterly in-person board meetings, ideally in the South East of England, near Oxfordshire. The role will also involve periodic online meetings (e.g., via Teams) with the CEO to discuss budgeting, financial planning, and emerging issues.

Values and Ethics: Strong commitment to the values and mission of Been There, with a passion for reducing the impact of body image issues on mental health and making a positive difference in the community.

WHY JOIN OUR BOARD?

  • Make a real impact in the mental health and wellbeing space.
  • Be part of a peer mentoring service that reflects the type of support the NHS and other health bodies consider a key focus for the future of mental health, contributing to innovative, peer-led approaches.
  • Play a key role in shaping the financial and strategic growth of a small, ambitious charity.
  • Work with a committed, passionate Board and team.
  • Bring your professional expertise to a hands-on Trustee role that combines governance with meaningful involvement.
