Overview
Beebe Healthcare is seeking a skilled RNFA to join our dynamic perioperative team. This vital role requires a clinically competent, registered, professional nurse with demonstrated expertise in the perioperative field. The Registered Nurse First Assist delivers exceptional surgical patient care by utilizing the nursing process, which includes thorough assessment, strategic planning, precise intervention, seamless implementation, and comprehensive evaluation.
Responsibilities
- Surgical Competency and Aseptic Technique: Demonstrates expert knowledge and skills in surgical routines, aseptic technique, and sterile field management. Proficient in proper scrub, gown, and gloving techniques for self, surgeons, and assistants. Continuously monitors asepsis in all roles (scrub, circulator, assistant) while anticipating the surgeon’s needs and maintaining precision during the surgical sequence. Reviews and prepares thoroughly for assigned procedures, ensuring instruments are passed correctly for optimal efficiency.
- Instrument Sterilization and Equipment Maintenance: Applies established protocols for autoclave and Steris unit operation, including daily A-Test/Biological tests. Ensures proper care, handling, and assembly of instruments for processing, with complete documentation of flash and Steris cycles per protocol.
- Supply and Equipment Accountability: Takes personal responsibility for the care, handling, and judicious use of departmental supplies, instruments, and equipment, ensuring their optimal condition.
- Perioperative Nursing Process: Utilizes the nursing process for comprehensive patient care, including assessment (collecting, interpreting, and recording data), care planning (developing strategies based on collected data), implementation (addressing physical and psychological patient needs), and evaluation (modifying care plans based on patient response).
- Perioperative Knowledge and Documentation: Demonstrates a strong understanding of theoretical and practical perioperative nursing concepts. Ensures thorough, accurate, and complete documentation of intraoperative patient care, including patient positioning, universal skin care precautions, and injury prevention.
- Sponge, Sharps, and Instrument Counts: Maintains strict adherence to surgical safety protocols by accurately completing counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments in compliance with established guidelines.
- Preference Sheet and Efficiency Management: Collaborates with Resource RNs and Nurse Managers to maintain up-to-date preference sheets and ensure efficient room turnover. Manages prioritization of case setup and gross cleaning to maximize operational efficiency.
- Financial Accuracy and Cost Efficiency: Accurately tracks patient charges, optimizes the use of case supplies, and provides complete data for post-case billing, supporting cost-efficient operations.
- Critical Thinking and Time Management: Demonstrates exceptional critical thinking, duty prioritization, and time management throughout the perioperative process.
- Intraoperative First Assist Duties: Executes first assist responsibilities, including providing hemostasis, managing exposure of the surgical site, and skillful handling of surgical instruments under the surgeon’s direction. Adheres to all accreditation and regulatory compliance standards.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
- Must possess current hospital OR experience (within the past 5 years)
- Prefer minimum of 1 year recent perioperative experience in the RN First Assist role.
- Must be knowledgeable regarding the nursing process and its application--assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
Competencies Skills
- Essential: Experience in hospital or acute care setting, clear communication skills both written and verbal, able to keep confidential information regarding patients and team members, able to withstand crisis situations, has skills to provide customer service to patients, team members and visitors, knowledge and experience with electronic health records.
Credentials
- Essential: RN - Registered Nurse, BLS - Basic Life Saving certification.
- Nonessential: CNOR - Certified Nursing - OR.

- Essential: RN Diploma/RN Graduate Program.
