Officer vacancies within this team are rare and highly sought after – so please read all of this advert before applying.

Initial training sits within the collaborated BCH Op Learning team. We deliver multiple educational pathways for student officers, PCSOs, Specials, Custody, Neighbourhood and PIP1 Supervisor – you could be asked to deliver on any of these programmes either as lead or supporting trainer, so a can-do attitude and flexible approach to your working day is a must have.

Delivering impactful learning is a very specific skill set, especially when the majority of your students are starting their programmes on day one with zero knowledge in this subject. Teaching police education is particularly complex, as it requires a mixture of techniques (e.g. face to face and virtual delivery, role plays, digital or group work) and you will be delivering a very wide curriculum of subjects – such as the law and your powers, stop and search, vulnerability, PIP1 as well as softer skills such as communication, problem solving, and team working.

Please don’t underestimate the complexity of managing a six-month programme with sixteen students, all of whom have their own learning needs and welfare concerns. This role is supervisor and trainer combined and whilst you have the support of your Sergeant, day to day management of your cohort is your responsibility including undertaking developmental 121s with your students, absence management, planning timetables, marking assessments and using One file to monitor compliance against the academic assessment framework.

To support you in this role, development is essential; we will offer you a College of Policing Teaching Essential programme at level 4 as part of your initial upskill – together with ongoing on the job learning and CPD opportunities.

The great part of this job is the team you will be working with – if you haven’t met us before, we can introduce you to someone who already is in the team for a pre-application chat – to make sure this is for you – and of course, the learners themselves - the difference between the start and end of a programme can be life changing for that individual and you will feel incredibly proud when you attend their passing out parades with your Chief Officers!

What are we looking for? An officer who values their own learning and can demonstrate that. You must have the highest standards, you are a role model and ambassador for your Force, and our students will benchmark themselves against what they see in you. The Code of Ethics is our priority, and we expect you to promote this within your teaching. We are inclusive, our student population represents every part of our communities – we are welcoming and accommodating.

If this is of interest to you – please speak to us before you apply and if you can, come to Dunstable to observe some teaching – it will give you a sense of our reality.
