Job Summary

The Construction Manager (Civils) will oversee construction activities on major infrastructure projects, typically above £100m, within a live operational environment.

The role is focused on airfield works and requires airfield construction experience or, significant highway construction and heavy civil works experience.

The role ensures safe, efficient delivery by coordinating teams, contractors, design interfaces, resources, quality, cost, and schedule performance.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and coordinate construction management activities across civil and airfield works, ensuring compliance with project requirements, HSE standards, quality expectations, budgets, and schedules.

  • Support constructability reviews, construction sequencing, logistics, temporary works, phasing plans, and execution strategies for live operational environments.
  • Coordinate with engineering, design, procurement, supply chain, project controls, and contractors to align construction requirements with design deliverables and delivery plans.
  • Monitor contractor mobilisation, site progress, delays, changes, quality submittals, commissioning, handover, and daily reporting.
  • Inspect works to ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, standards, statutory regulations, and contractual requirements.
  • Contribute to cost estimates, budgets, risk assessments, progress reporting, and continuous improvement of delivery processes.
  • Lead, coach, and mentor assigned field and project personnel, promoting safety, collaboration, quality, and delivery excellence.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related discipline, with relevant experience
  • Significant experience as a Construction Manager, Senior Field Engineer, or similar role on major civil engineering infrastructure projects.
  • Strong knowledge of civil and airfield construction methods, sequencing, constructability, HSE, quality management, and project handover.
  • Experience working on live operational facilities and complex multi-discipline infrastructure or asset improvement projects.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder coordination, technical leadership, and practical problem-solving skills.

Desirable Knowledge and Skills

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent professional registration.
  • Experience in aviation, airfield, or major transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of UK construction and safety regulations, including CDM requirements.
  • Experience with NEC contract administration and project delivery frameworks.
  • Experience planning and delivering brownfield projects in live environments.
