The customer, Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE), supports the UK Government’s nuclear defence strategy. Bechtel is collaborating with AWE to deliver the preliminary design for the facilities within the Future Materials Campus, a multi-billion‑pound investment in nuclear and non‑nuclear facilities.

This position is for an Environmental and Sustainability Specialist who will work a multi‑year contract on a UK nuclear infrastructure programme. The role requires a proactive individual to support the Engineering Delivery Manager as the environmental representative, assisting in design efforts, preparing reports, conducting studies, and ensuring environmental requirements are integrated into project delivery.

Major Responsibilities

  • Execute environmental and sustainability deliverables according to design criteria and approved procedures.
  • Facilitate the environmental component of the ESH Program, including technical and administrative aspects.
  • Develop studies on the environmental impacts and sustainability of proposed design and construction processes.
  • Prepare, coordinate, and review designs, studies, reports, and proposals.
  • Coordinate design development with other engineering disciplines while managing workload and meeting schedule due dates.
  • Participate in safety reviews (HAZID, HAZOP) and review compliance with applicable safety and quality standards.
  • Review deliverables from other disciplines and suppliers during project execution to ensure design intent is incorporated.
  • Interpret and integrate environmental requirements into design, planning documents, risk assessment, and program execution.
  • Support informal studies and technical briefings with customers, suppliers, and other departments.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Recognised bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, field biology, or natural resources.
  • Ideally 8+ years of relevant experience.
  • Chartership with the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) or a similar qualification.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of environmental management, monitoring programs, principles, and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations and permitting processes.
  • Familiarity with ISO 14001 principles and environmental monitoring/reporting procedures.
  • Data analysis and reporting skills, including compiling monitoring data and preparing compliance reports.
  • Attention to detail for identifying and documenting potential environmental impacts.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem‑solving, organisational, and research skills.
  • Relevant industrial experience; general nuclear experience is a plus.
  • Must be able to obtain SC Clearance for access to the AWE site.

Other

  • The role is based primarily at Aldermaston, UK, with occasional travel to Bechtel’s London office.
  • Flexibility includes three days per week on site and two days working from home or the Bechtel office.
  • The position is open to United Kingdom nationals only.
