Job Summary This position is for a Safety Case Lead who will work a multi‑year contract on a United Kingdom nuclear infrastructure programme. The project is at the conceptual design phase, driving a programme involving a multi‑billion‑pound investment in nuclear and non‑nuclear facilities. The Safety Case Lead supports the Delivery Manager as the safety lead for engineering activities, provides assurance leadership, leads a team of Safety Case Engineers, interfaces with regulators, and supports long‑range design and engineering support.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Execute assurance deliverables according to requirements, approved procedures, practices, and codes.
  • Assist in the development and periodic review of nuclear safety cases.
  • Review submissions for system‑ and operational‑safety planning and execution throughout the project life cycle to ensure compliance.
  • Assist in design development of systems involving nuclear safety requirements to optimise the safety case.
  • Support development of resource‑loaded schedules for safety case development in support of project milestones.
  • Deliver safety cases to regulators, including the development of practical approaches to issues and meeting established requirements.
  • Interface regularly with engineering, customers, and regulators to discuss progress, receive feedback, and ensure satisfaction with the safety case approach.
  • Support studies into environmental impacts and sustainability of the proposed design/construction process.
  • Participate in safety reviews (HAZID, HAZOP) and review compliance with applicable safety and quality standards.
  • Identify risks and value‑improvement opportunities, clarifying areas of complexity throughout all phases of the works.
  • Support informal studies and technical briefings with customers, suppliers, and other departments and disciplines.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Recognised bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience within a licensee organisation with knowledge of interfacing with regulators in the delivery of projects.
  • Minimum of 10 years experience in Assurance Safety.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of nuclear safety principals and techniques.
  • Understanding of site licence conditions and pertinent nuclear safety requirements, and the ability to anticipate licence changes necessary for effective execution.
  • Knowledge of how safety controls are implemented and maintained within the safety case, including temporary shielding, containment and other radiological control measures.
  • Understanding of engineering design processes and configuration management practices.
  • Knowledge of Nuclear Safety Processes and Standards.
  • Experience analysing safety cases and technical reports for regulators to support project milestones.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • Relevant industrial and general nuclear experience (a plus).
  • Ability to obtain an SC Clearance for access to the AWE Site.

Other: The role will be based primarily at Aldermaston, UK, with potential travel to Bechtel’s London office. Flexibility in work locations includes three days per week at the project site and two days working from home or the Bechtel office. The position is open to United Kingdom nationals only and is subject to a successful interview and agreement on terms and conditions of employment.
