Project Overview: Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Company have partnered to deliver the first AP1000 nuclear power reactors in Poland for our customer, the Polish Entity Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ). Bechtel will be the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. As the EPC, our responsibilities will include providing the design for the Turbine Island and Balance of Plant as well as the construction of the entire facility. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity, and we are looking for the talent that will help expand Poland’s nuclear base and build a strong and long-lasting energy future for generations to come. This position is subject to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) regulations at 10 CFR Part 810 (Part 810), which govern the transfer of hardware, materials, and technology to support the construction and operation of commercial nuclear power plants overseas.
Job Summary: In this role, you will lead design, development, modification, evaluation, and constructability reviews of civil/structural components and processes as they relate to tunnels. Your technical expertise will ensure the unique and complex requirements of a project’s civil/structural aspects are met. This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and may require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership. You may also have the opportunity to join the project in Lubiatowo, Poland should this be something that you may want to do.
Major Responsibilities:
- Plans and conducts independent Civil/Structural work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application, and adaptation of Civil/Structural engineering techniques, procedures and criteria on a medium size project or assignment in support of a global business unit.
- Leads the design, development, modification, and evaluation of Civil/Structural tunnel components according to relevant Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards and guides, Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs) and Design Control Checklist (DCCL) and Design Review Notices (DRNs).
- Reviews and approves key design documents, supplier drawings and data, material specifications, drawings, change orders, and bid summaries for the project to which assigned.
- Designs structures using advanced knowledge of structural analysis, including statics, dynamics, and materials engineering.
- Determines the appropriate use of various structural elements such as steel, wood, masonry, and concrete to ensure appropriate material is used based on load or stress requirements.
- Originates and checks complex Civil/Structural engineering deliverables, such as steel and concrete calculations, specifications, and material requisitions.
- Develops conceptual designs for Civil/Structural engineering projects or projects having specialized or unique requirements.
- Prepares or oversees the preparation of discipline estimates and work plan in accordance with project scope, schedule and budget, and supports implementation and assists with performance reporting.
- Interprets new or special regulations, codes, standards, criteria, and performance data.
- Mentors Civil/Structural engineering personnel by providing on-the-job training for their professional development.
- Leads constructability reviews.
Education and Experience Requirements: Requires a bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 10-13 years of relevant experience or 14-17 years of relevant work experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Proven work experience emphasizing design and construction of tunnels on engineering projects.
- Familiar with provisions of Eurocodes and current codes of practice and design standards and regulations.
- Ability to independently execute the detailed design drawings of tunnels.
- Thorough knowledge of engineering deliverables, such as drawings and specifications.
- Willingness to travel in support of the project to client, supplier, business partner facilities or to site, as required.
- Proficient with Microsoft 365 application suite (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc).
- Ability to express technical issues in a clear and concise manner, both written and verbally.
- Hold Professional Engineering Registration or Chartership.
