Overview
Working under the direct supervision of the PracticeNurse Phlebotomy Lead and in accordance with practice guidelines and protocols, the phlebotomist will work within a team of experienced staff delivering phlebotomy services at Beccles Medical Centre and Cutlers Hill Surgery.
Responsibilities
- Obtain blood samples from patients to support laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
- Perform a variety of routine blood drawing procedures, including venepuncture, using standard equipment.
- Participate in the delivery of new warfarin monitoring service under the supervision of other clinicians.
- Interact directly with patients to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, alleviate fears, and elicit cooperation.
- Ensure the patient is comfortable and relaxed, and confirm their agreement to blood collection.
- Accurate, legible labeling of all samples to confirm patient identity.
- Record collection of blood samples in the patient’s record using correct templates.
- Ensure samples are stored appropriately and picked up by the laboratory in a timely fashion.
- Report anomalies to a senior member of staff and notify the GP or relevant clinician of any significant patient issues.
- Manage and use equipment safely and in accordance with agreed procedures in place.
Qualifications and Experience
- GCSE Grade C or above in Maths or English (or equivalent grades will be accepted) – Essential.
- Experience in working in a Primary Care environment using System One – Desirable.
