The Virginia Indigent Defense Commission is now accepting applications for the position of Assistant Public Defender I/II. This role will serve our mission of protecting and defending the rights and dignity of our clients through zealous, compassionate, high-quality legal advocacy.

Job Duties:

  • This unique opportunity to be on the front lines of criminal justice reform offers a platform to develop and pursue social change.
  • The attorney will handle cases in various stages of litigation for adults and juveniles, reporting directly to the Chief Public Defender.
  • The Assistant Public Defender must have compassion for indigent clients.
  • Excellent legal skills are required.
  • Able to spot and anticipate legal issues.
  • Duties include:
  • Conducting client interviews with staff investigators.
  • Filing pretrial motions & post-trial motions.
  • Litigating motions.
