Severe Weather Technician — Location: South Queensferry
Category: Network / Operations
Contract: Permanent, Full Time, 40 Hours per week

BEAR Scotland is a leading provider of highway maintenance services across Scotland. We manage and maintain over 2,000km of Scotland’s trunk road network, tackling just about every imaginable task and working round the clock to help keep Scotland moving. The South-East Trunk Road Unit spans 506km through some of the busiest sections of the country, from central Scotland to through the Scottish Borders. Trunk roads in the South East range from the major multi-lane motorways across the central belt to roads through villages in the borders. The South-East Unit includes 870 bridges and structures including the iconic Queensferry Crossing and Forth Road Bridge, as well as other major bridges such as the Kincardine Bridge and Clackmannanshire Bridge.

We have an exciting opportunity for Severe Weather Technician to join our existing team on a full-time basis, reporting to our Severe Weather Manager.

Responsibilities

  • Collection and Management of Weather Data
  • Maintaining salt stock levels and their storage facilities
  • Achieving response times for precautionary treatment, patrols and snow clearance
  • Plant & Communications
  • The Road Weather Information System (RWIS), weather forecasting service and weather radar system
  • Training of Staff & Operatives
  • Preparation and updating of rotas for duty staff, maintaining electronic records and manual records
  • Preparing weekly/monthly and annual winter service report
  • Liaising with Third Parties
  • Communicating with Transport Scotland during severe weather events
  • Participation in conference calls with Transport Scotland as required
  • Implementing Additional Resources when required
  • Ensuring completion of Daily Action Plans and Uploading to Vaisala Manager
  • Any other tasks that involved in the delivery of Winter operations and weather events.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, with confidence in handling and analysing data
  • Able to work effectively under pressure and manage competing priorities
  • Strong organisation Skills
  • Qualification or Demonstrated Interest in Meteorology is desirable
  • Prior experience within a Civils or Roads Environment is advantageous
  • Valid UK Driving Licence is required
  • IHE Winter Decision Makers – Desired but can be obtained in year 1
