BEAR Scotland is a leading provider of highway maintenance services across Scotland. We manage and maintain over 2,000km of Scotland’s trunk road network, tackling just about every imaginable task and working round the clock to help keep Scotland moving.

The North West Trunk Road Unit spans some 1,422km of trunk road through some of the most scenic parts of the country. It covers a huge area of Scotland, from Thurso and Wick in the very north of the Highlands down to Campbeltown in Argyll and Bute, from Uig on Skye to Perth and Stirling.

We have vacancies for HGV Drivers / Highway Maintenance Operatives to join our existing operations team. You will report to Operations Supervisor and Operations Manager and will be responsible to help keeping Scotland moving.

While this is an HGV Driver role, in quieter months the successful candidate will be assisting the Operations team with the duties below.

Responsibilities and Activities

  • Winter maintenance duties which include fitting gritter body and blade, driving gritter and spread salt by hand if required.
  • Winter maintenance rota during the winter months driving our state-of-the-art snow ploughs, when conditions dictate.
  • Responsibility for the health and safety of the public, colleagues and yourself.
  • Carriageway patching
  • Traffic sign erection
  • Footway improvements
  • Traffic management
  • Cyclic duties such as grip cleaning, sign washing and gully cleaning

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • HGV Licence
  • Knowledge of the requirement for Health and Safety rules and procedures.
  • Previous experience as a roadworker is desirable, however training can be provided.
  • There is a requirement to undertake training and to achieve competence in aspects of the job.
  • Physically fit for working in sometimes arduous conditions.
  • Experience of using small plant.
  • Holding tickets for plant, traffic management, and Health and Safety an advantage.
