The South-East Trunk Road Unit spans 506km through some of the busiest sections of the country, from central Scotland to through the Scottish Borders. Trunk roads in the South East range from the major multi-lane motorways across the central belt to roads through villages in the borders.

The South-East Unit includes 870 bridges and structures including the iconic Queensferry Crossing and Forth Road Bridge, as well as other major bridges such as the Kincardine Bridge and Clackmannanshire Bridge.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Strategic Road Safety Engineer to join our existing team on a full-time basis, reporting to the Road Safety Manager. This opportunity is ideal for an Experienced Senior Engineer or a talented professional ready to take the next step in their career. Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring compliance with and assist in the continuous improvement of, the Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality systems and procedures that form part of BEAR’s Integrated Management Systems.
  • Undertake Accident Investigation and Prevention studies and provide sound economic assessment and appraisal of Road Safety Improvements.
  • Undertake the role of Principal Designer on behalf of the company, as required, ensuring company compliance with the designer and principal designer roles under CDM 2015.
  • Liaison with client contacts and auditors.
  • Assist the Road Safety Manager with the preparation of the Annual Road Safety Review and the development of the Road Safety and Active Travel 1 and 3-year programmes.
  • Attendance at Project Liaison Meetings and other internal and external meetings as required.
  • Oversee the investigation, design, procurement, supervision and valuation of Works and Operations.
  • Preparation of preliminary and detailed cost estimates, design and construction briefs and liaising directly with supply chain partners of both consultancy and contracting services.
  • Co-ordinating the production, issue and archiving of all drawings, documents and scheme files associated with the Road Safety and Active Travel Programme.
  • Provide expertise, as required, in the implementation of the Road Safety Audit Process for all design functions within NMC SE.
  • Provide expertise, as required, in the implementation of the “safe systems” approach to road safety for all design functions within NMC SE.
  • Management and control of the workflow to the Operations teams.
  • Ensuring compliance with all technical standards of design and construction.
  • Ensuring that adequate environmental screening is undertaken and appropriate mitigation measures implemented prior to work commencing in compliance with environmental law.
  • Submission of Departures from Standard when applicable.
  • Provide mentoring and support to all members of the Road Safety team.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering (Essential).
  • IEng Certified, or expected to achieve within 12 months.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of Scottish Trunk Road Maintenance Contracts.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of DMRB and design processes.
  • Knowledge and understanding of CDM Regulations 2015.
  • Understanding of Road Safety Engineering and the Safe Systems Approach.
  • Completion of RoSPA Road Safety Engineering 10 Day Training (or happy to complete).
  • Valid UK Driving Licence is essential.
