BEAR Scotland is a leading provider of Highway Maintenance services across Scotland. We manage and maintain over 2,000km of Scotland’s trunk road network, tackling a wide range of tasks and working around the clock to keep Scotland moving.

We inspect, manage, and maintain over 2,500km of Scotland’s trunk road network, including 1,500 trunk road structures in the North West of Scotland for our client, Transport Scotland. Our work involves some of the most scenic yet challenging parts of the country, managing structures such as historical masonry arch bridges, culverts, walls, and iconic major structures like Kessock, Skye, Connel, and Dornoch Bridges.

We are seeking a Bridge Engineer to join BEAR Scotland’s North West Bridges Team at our Inverness office. The role involves assisting with project management, inspection, investigation, design, procurement, and supervision of maintenance works, as well as updating records including Health & Safety files and Operation & Maintenance manuals. Candidates with suitable knowledge and experience as a Graduate or Senior Bridge Engineer will also be considered for a suitable position.

The Bridge Engineer will support Senior or Principal Engineers in managing and maintaining major bridges in the NW unit, ensuring work is completed to technical standards, on time, within budget, and according to safety and environmental regulations.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Design of bridge maintenance projects and management of design records
  • Perform detailed design in accordance with DMRB, MCHW, Eurocodes, and British Standards
  • Deliver work on schedule and within budget, planning and prioritizing tasks
  • Adhere to Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality procedures
  • Ensure environmental compliance and mitigation measures are implemented
  • Update structural records in client management systems
  • Monitor and control project costs effectively
  • Establish good relationships with clients, stakeholders, and authorities
  • Assist with media releases and correspondence
  • Undertake Designer’s role under CDM Regulations, including risk assessments and method statements
  • Produce Health & Safety Information packs
  • Manage and supervise subcontractors on site
  • Support other team members as required

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience
  • Practical knowledge of DMRB, MCHW, and related standards
  • Valid UK driving license
