We are looking to recruit a Part-time Compliance Officer on a FTC/Maternity Cover role. The Compliance Officer will report to the Head of Risk and Compliance, with the scope of the role expected to expand with the development of the Department and the candidate.

The ideal candidate will have ready-to-go experience dealing with AML issues in the legal sector, ideally experience using Smartsearch, and a broader background in law firm compliance with working knowledge of legal compliance, able to handle day-to-day queries.

The Ideal Candidate will:

  • Deal with client risk assessments for AML purposes, CDD gathering and filing.
  • Support CDD gathering on matters where EDD is required.
  • Assist PAs and fee-earners with AML queries, interpreting Smartsearch results, discounting false-positive PEP and other hits, and advising on UBO structures.
  • Provide oversight of matters rated as high-risk for money laundering.
  • Handle ad-hoc compliance-related queries.

Key Requirements

  • Compliance advice and guidance – Support and deliver key Compliance processes, lead some processes such as AML oversight and information barriers. Resolve issues as they arise and identify areas for improvement in support of improved Compliance and risk management in the Firm.
  • Relationship Management – Build relationships virtually and in person across multiple offices to maximise effectiveness and the reputation of the Compliance department.
  • Work Planning – Contribute to planning to ensure Compliance and risk management projects are scheduled and delivered.
  • Compliance Policies – Maintain an up-to-date suite of Compliance policies for each jurisdiction; assist with review and update of Firm policies.
  • Compliance reviews – Assist with reviews of processes across the Firm.
  • Solution development – Propose solutions to the Senior Compliance Officer and Head of Risk and Compliance on compliance and risk issues as they arise.
  • Strategic Projects – Support with strategic projects as appropriate.

Person Specification

  • Qualifications – Compliance or risk qualification is desirable but not essential.
  • Knowledge of Regulatory requirements in E&W is essential; knowledge in Scotland, Ireland, Ontario and Dubai is desirable but not essential.
  • Experience – A successful track record in a comparable compliance role with an E&W law firm. Interest in developing Compliance, risk management and regulatory knowledge is essential. Commercially aware with capability to provide pragmatic, timely solutions. Experience in a legal context is desirable but not essential. Experience in providing clear, balanced guidance on a range of compliance issues and in identifying improvements. Experience in building effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Skills – Professional, persuasive and influential with a can-do attitude. Well-organised with the ability to prioritise effectively. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to gain the confidence of stakeholders. Ability to challenge and be collaborative as a team player. Ability to relate the impact of your role to wider firm plans.
